Easter Candy Review: Peeps Orange Creme Flavored Eggs

Peeps Orange Creme Eggs

It seems I may be one of the few people in the world who actually likes Just Born’s Peeps. I mean, sure, most Candy Addicts will pop a few at Easter just to say they did, but come on, who would really eat more than two?

Me.

That’s right, I’m here to admit that I’m addicted to Peeps. Yellow, purple, hearts or chicks, I love the sugar covered marshmallow goodness. Imagine my joy, then, when I found a brand new (to me, at least) variety to try this Easter season: Orange Creme Eggs! Ooh, I wonder how they taste…

Candy Review: Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road

Snickers Rockin Nut Road
I thought I’d try something different with this review… consider it a kind of “stream of consciousness” review. I’m going to write what comes to mind as I try the Snickers Rockin’ Nut Road.

The new Rockin’ Nut Road Snickers wrapper promises “almonds, caramel and marshmallow-flavored nougat wrapped in dark chocolate” – sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? Opening it, there really is no real aroma at all. Biting into it, I see that the nougat is snow white so not only does it taste like marshmallow, it looks like marshmallow too. The one thing that hits me, besides the marshmallow taste, is that it’s not overly sweet like a regular Snickers can be.

The Rockin’ Nut Road Snickers is very s’mores-ish tasting and the almond gives it a similar consistency that graham crackers would. The almond flavor isn’t very strong though – the most prevalent flavor is the marshmallow nougat. I don’t really taste the caramel at all, which is a shame because I really love caramel. The choice to go with dark chocolate was a wise move – Snickers milk chocolate would have made it too sweet.

Retro Candy Review: GooGoo Clusters

GooGoo Cluster Chocolate Candy Package

It’s hard to believe that the world’s first combination candy bar is still an unknown name for most. I am referring to the GooGoo Cluster, which was made by the Standard Candy Company back in 1912. Like most classic and retro candy, they can be difficult to find unless you live in the region that is producing them. So in this case, anyone who isn’t living in the South is very possibly missing out on a very tasty piece of history.

What made the GooGoo Cluster so new in 1912 was, unlike Hershey’s and all the other large candy companies at the time, the GooGoo Cluster wanted to be more than just a solid bar of chocolate. Instead, the creators of the GooGoo made a mound of marshmallow, caramel and roasted peanuts covered in milk chocolate. Now that’s a candy with ambition! How the GooGoo got it’s name is shrouded in myth, since no one exactly remembers who was first to suggest it.

As the years have passed, the recipe for the GooGoo has remained unchanged due to Standard Candy Company’s strong ties to tradition. Even so, new varieties of the GooGoo have been added; the GooGoo Supreme with pecans instead of peanuts and the GooGoo Peanut Butter which replaced the marshmallow and caramel.

Ready to find out how they taste?

Candy Review: Generation Max 3 Musketeers S’mores Brownie Bar

Generation Max 3 Musketeers S'mores Brownie Bar

Generation Max is a new line of products by Mars just released this year to provide a healthier candy alternative to kids. “How healthy can candy be?” you wonder. It all comes down to portion control, fat/sugar percentages and added vitamins/minerals. For example, each Generation Max item has less than 150 calories and no trans fat. They also sport less than 35% of total calories from fat, 10% from saturated fat and 35% from sugar. These treats, which feature Mars candy names and items like M&Ms, Snickers and 3 Musketeers, are meant to be sold in vending machines in schools.

I’ve seen many candy bars in my day and the Generation Max 3 Musketeers S’mores Brownie Bar (try saying that three times fast) has the busiest packaging design I’ve seen yet. It’s a bright healthy yellow color with colored silhouettes of people running, jumping… being active and having fun. The 3 Musketeers logo takes second billing to the new “Generation MAX” logo that is the largest image on the whole bar. The catchphrase “Keeps you going!” is clearly written underneath, giving us the impression that this isn’t just good tasting candy, but fuel for our body and fun activities.

I’m first interested by the image of the bar on the front, showing a cross section of the bar, which looks like a 3 Musketeers in the top part, but with a layer of brownie and marshmallow underneath. Or perhaps they replaced the fluffy nougat with marshmallow? The illustration isn’t clear on which it is, but that’s what tasting is for, isn’t it?

Candy Review: Hershey’s Kisses: Malt and Chocolate Marshmallow

Hershey Kisses Chocolate Marshmallow

Am I the only one who is having a hard time realizing it’s December already? It seems the year will be over before we know it! Actually, now that I think about it, I know I’m not alone. I believe Hershey’s knows that the year of the 100th anniversary of Kisses is soon to end and they’re cranking out some new ones to show it!

Enter the new Malt and Chocolate Marshmallow Hershey’s Kisses. I can tell these aren’t made to be associated with the other “holiday” flavors of Kisses because these lack the seasonally decorated packaging. It’s pretty sweet to think that they’re still making these Limited Editions separate from the holiday candies. Many would call that good marketing. Regardless, I’m here to give these newbies a taste!
