Licorice Candy Review: Panda Licorice – Raspberry

Panda Licorice - Raspberry Bar

I bought these at a flea market for only 69 cents, while in search of a Leonardo Pez Dispenser to complete my collection of the new TMNT dispensers. They were on the counter in a jar and it was a total impulse buy simply because it said “Raspberry” on the package. I wasn’t even sure exactly what it was when I bought it. It’s called a Raspberry Bar, but it also says it is licorice. But the ingredients say it’s mostly molasses. In fact, there are only 4 ingredients total, Molasses, wheat flour, citric acid, and natural flavor.

The bar itself is a super dark red, almost black even. The bar is about the length of a Snickers, though much skinnier. The candy is also a little sticky to the touch, I assume from their use of molasses. The taste wasn’t exactly full on raspberry, as I expected it to be. The taste definitely reminded me of something, and my friend who tried it agreed.

It took a while, but we finally hit on it – dried apricots. It tastes like dried apricots and raspberries. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and I thought the candy was pretty good actually – it was just a little different than I was expecting. The Panda Licorice company is located in Finland, but their candy appears to be fairly easy to get in stores or online. Amazon carries the Raspberry and a few other flavors of Panda Licorice.

Liquorice (licorice) Skittles

Licroice Skittles

Did you know that Skittles makes (made?) Liquorice Skittles and they were available in non-US markets? I stumbled upon this page that talks about them then found a blog entry talking about them. Here is a description:
  • green — aniseed. They taste much like the Springerle cookies my mom used to make at christmas every year. Yummy.
  • yellow — vanilla. A nice combination of vanilla flavour and liquorice.
  • white — mint. A bit too minty for my taste.
  • red — spice. I think it’s cinnamon but it burns a little on the tongue.
  • black — liquorice. Very strong liquorice flavour.

The most recent mention of Liquorice Skittles I found was in 2003 and I found a few mentions as far back as 2001. The Skittles product list doesn’t mention them so I have to assume they are not being made anymore. Has anyone (ever) seen these? (Not that I want any – I hate licorice.)

Speaking of Skittles, I need to find a bag of Ice Cream Skittles – sounds nasty, but might be a fun review. UPDATE: i found some Ice Cream Skittles – not bad, but not great.

Mr. Pibb + Red Vines = Crazy Delicious T-Shirt

Crazy Delicious

If you like the SNL skit/rap of Chronic(what?)cles of Narnia as much as I do, you’re appreciate this new T-shirt that says Mr. Pibb + Red Vines = Crazy Delicious. I don’t think I have ever had Red Vines, but I can appreciate a good SNL skit and a T-shirt that has candy on it. Double True.

UPDATE: I found some Red Vines and reviewed them here.
