Editor’s Note: A reader submitted a review of these on the same day Mariko wrote her review so since the reviews were wildly different, I figured we’d post both of them in one just to show that reviews are just opinions and you may not always agree with them.
Mariko’s review:
Ahh, the crispness in the air and the bright, clear sun can only mean one thing – summer is over! I am not a winter lover, but I do love autumn, and one of the main things I love about autumn? Yes, the ultimate Candy Addict holiday – Halloween. It’s only September, but the stores are already gearing up for the holiday of holidays by lining the shelves with Halloween candies. When I saw an ad for the limited edition Hershey’s Kisses in candy corn flavor, I pounced. Hershey’s Kisses and candy corn? What’s not to love! Well, unfortunately, there is plenty not to love.

Like any true chocoholic, I believe that you can never have too much chocolate. Solid, nutty, cream-filled, fruit-filled, peanut butter, or mint – there’s always room for more! However, I think even I would have trouble finishing Hershey’s latest chocolate creation. To commemorate 100 years of chocolatey goodness, Hershey unveiled “The World’s Largest Hershey’s Kisses Chocolate†on July 7th.
Standing at 12 feet tall, the giant chocolate weighs in at an astounding 30,540 pounds! That, my friends, is a lot of chocolate. This far surpasses the previous largest chocolate record of 15,026 pounds. The Kiss features a seven-foot-long plume reading “100 Years of Kissesâ€, and is covered in 16,460 feet of foil wrapping to create the traditional look of a Hershey’s Kiss.
It took 152 people nine days to construct the Kiss, which debuted as part of Hershey’s birthday celebration at Hershey’s Chocolate World in Pennsylvania. In case any of you doubt the record-breaking status of this chocolate gargantuan, the Guinness Book of World Records has certified this Kiss as “The World’s Largest Piece of Chocolate.†Take that, Nestlé and Mars!
If you want to get an up close and personal look at “The World’s Largest Hershey’s Kisses Chocolate” in person, you better hurry. It’s only slated to be on display at Hershey Park’s Chocolate World until July 12th! However, if you can’t make it to Pennsylvania to take part in all of the centennial festivities, don’t despair. If the above video was too fast for you, Hershey has provided a slideshow of the making of the Giant Kiss that shows it a bit slower.

Neapolitan Kisses
I heard about these Kisses recently thanks to a reader and I immediately began a quest for them. The quest didn’t last long since they were being advertised by my local CVS Pharmacy. Seems like these days there’s another new “Limited Edition” candy practically every day – and Hershey’s Kisses seem to be leading the pack. Perhaps their small size, and short ingredient list allow the folks at Hershey to experiment, test, and sell flavors at a faster rate than a more complicated candy would allow.

Again with the limited edition Hershey’s Kisses! Will they ever end? Let’s hope not, because all the special flavors give us an ongoing excuse to purchase them. Anyway, the other day I was leafing through piles of Sunday newspaper advertisements when something in the Target circular caught my eye–Hershey’s Limited Edition Kisses in orange creme flavor! The circular claimed this flavor was a Target exclusive! How does Target do it? I mean, you know that Target has the exclusive red marshmallow Peeps, right? Red! How cool is that! But I digress. I scampered off to Target in search of the orange creme Kisses and was promptly rewarded.
Aren’t they lovely? They taste quite lovely as well. They reminded me a bit of the limited edition Dreamsicle (or was it Creamsicle?) flavor of Frangos. The orange creme Kiss is white chocolate with stripes of orange-flavored white chocolate. It has a pleasant orange flavor that blends nicely with the white chocolate. I detected a hint of vanilla, too. Though they are tasty, they are also quite sweet, so you can’t eat too many of them without getting sugar overload. Now I am kind of craving orange creme soda, Creamsicles, and those little orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream cups. I think these orange creme Kisses may have started something …

If you’ve ever wondered how those scrumptious Kisses are created at the Hershey’s factory, you are in luck! The gang over at coolstuffbeingmade.com have released another great video showing how candy is made. Previously, they showed how chocolate is made, and holiday candy being made. This time, they have a great 45 minute video from 2001 showing how Hershey’s Kisses are made. From silos of milk to bagged Kisses packed in shipping boxes and stacked on pallets – you get the whole story from start to finish.
