Name That Candy: Chocolate-Covered, Cherry-Topped, Coconut Bar.

There must be something about this time of year that makes people nostalgic. One of our readers, Valerie, is dreaming of a favorite candy bar that she used to LOVE as a child!

It was coconut, similar to a Mounds bar texture, but had a layer of cherry across the top. If you bit into it, the cherry did not leak out – it was soft but not liquid with a consistency of jelly/jello. The whole thing was then covered in a thin layer of chocolate. I used to buy 4 of them for a dollar as often as I possibly could.

I bought them in Alameda, California, possibly in a Safeway store on “Bay Farm Island” (Zip 94502) sometime between 1980-1985. They were individually-wrapped bars and packaged in shiny, brown foil wrappers with red writing. They were very flat, 6 inch long, candy bars and were not even half an inch tall.

I don’t know what it is, but it sounds delicious! Can anyone help her remember the name of this candy?

Candy Review: Ooh la la Candy

I love a good gift as much as the next person. However, I really prefer functional gifts. Not that I don’t appreciate the thought, but how many basket-fulls of perfumed lotion can one person stand?! Well, Ooh La La Candy is the answer to gift giving. A sweet sentiment (pun intended) AND a tasty treat makes for a good gift. How can you go wrong with popular candy mixed with some good design/packaging?

Sweet Stripes CupcakeGiven my predilection for useful gifts, it is needless to say that I was looking forward to seeing if Ooh La La Candy could meet my gift-giving needs. I quickly noticed the dual purpose of the “cupcakes”. Gift + sustenance! The cupcakes are crafted from candy which means one of my favorite things is being made from one of my other favorite things! The Sweet Stripes cupcake consists of black and white Sixlets (who doesn’t like Sixlets??) and is topped with a giant pink gumball. (Be forewarned, the anticipation will surely build because the packaging of the little cupcake is a bear to get into! They are securely attached to their individual, plastic cubes.) The other cupcake I tried was a PB&J Cupcake made with, yep, you guessed it, peanut butter chips and grape jellybeans. In lieu of a gumball topping the cupcake, this one had a peanut butter cup adornment.

Candy Review: Organic Zootons

In my Candy Addict staff profile, I joke that I adhere to a strict organic, vegan diet to balance my rabid candy consumption. Though that’s not entirely true, if it were I could find sweet organic, vegan refuge in Zootons. What are Zootons, you ask? Well Zootons are beings hailing from Zootopia, of course! And they are here to save Earthling children and adults alike from bad candy.

And how do they do that, you ask? Why, by generously sharing their homeland’s chemical-free, fertilizer-free, gelatin-free, organic, vegan candy with “out of this world taste” of the same name. Naturally! And in the spirit of promoting healthy habits and practicing what they preach, Zootons also donate a percentage of their profits to Healthy Child, Healthy World, a non-profit organization campaigning for healthy environments for children.

And while these are all excellent reasons for both vegan and omnivorous Addicts to give Zootons a try, we all know that when it comes to candy it really just comes down to taste (I mean, if it tastes like organic dirt it still tastes like dirt, right?), so let’s get to the important stuff.
