I ain’t got no sneakers

Despite the title, this is candy-related, just stay with me…..

On the last day of the All Candy Expo I have to drop my suitcases off at the bag check at the show since I had to check out of the hotel already. As I pay the $2 per bag for someone who is “Not Responsible For Lost Items” to watch my laptop and my many pounds of candy, I get the ticket from the young candy-less lady working there I think to myself “I should get some candy for her – I bet she would appreciate that.”

As I get my ticket I say to her, “Would you like some candy? Tell me what kind you like and I’ll try and get some for you.”

“I ain’t got no sneakers”, she tells me.

I look at her shoes and wonder why she thinks I can get her some sneakers. Does she think it’s the All Shoe Expo? Why is she asking for sneakers? I say “You need sneakers?” in a totally befuddled voice.

She: “Sneakers!”
Me: “Sneakers? You need sneakers???”

Obviously, there is some miscommunication going on here. Why does she think I can get her some shoes? Finally, another worker comes by and says “Snickers. She wants Snickers.”

“Oh!!!!”, I say. “I’ll see what I can do.”

It’s all I can do to keep myself from busting out laughing now. As I turn around I break into a huge grin and laugh quietly to myself. She wants a chocolately, peanutty, nougat-filled candy bar, not athletic shoes! The woman wants Snickers!

I didn’t get any Snickers for her, but found a few other candies I thought she might like. She didn’t mention the Sneakers shortage when I gave them to her and I didn’t mention it either.

This is a true story. I can’t make stuff like that up.

Candy Review: McPhee Lollipops, History Tastes Good!

McPhee Lollipops

Yum, history is tasty! Candy Addicts know what I mean because of the historical lollipops that I’ve previously mentioned. The kind folks over at McPhee decided that I needed to taste these historical legends for myself! Sweet!

These aren’t your typical lollipops. Not only are they made of up a base of boiled hard sugar like Ring Pops and Dum-Dums, they also have a hard, foamy, piped-on sugar for the details of the facial features (think eyebrows and jewelry) that reminds me of decorations on holiday candy. This blending of textures is a real strength, since it provides a welcome contrast for the mouth to experience. So here’s how they taste…

History Made Sweet With Character Lollipops

Abe Lincoln Head Lollipop

Now not only can you learn history, but taste it too! McPhee has released some truly bizarre lollipops in the shapes of Abe Lincoln, Sigmund Freud, and Marie Antoinette. We’ve previously covered some of McPhee’s other strange candies here at Candy Addict, but I think these lollipops take things to a whole new level.

All of them look quite tasty with Lincoln being orange-flavored, Marie with Cherry, and Freud with Watermelon. How are we supposed to choose? Historical preference? I also couldn’t help but laugh at the funny altered quotes on the display boxes where Marie’s exclaiming: “Let them eat….CANDY!”

I’m sure many of you would want to try these (I do!) and I can’t help but wonder what Freud would have to say about eating a likeness of his head.

Skittles Singing Opera Rabbit Commercial

I could barely stay on the couch when I first saw the Skittles rabbit commercial on TV, and now I can play it over and over again on YouTube. I have two rabbits—Cletus and Abner—but neither of them sing, unlike the Skittles rabbit, who makes an oddly pleasant, incessant, howl-like opera sound. I liked the clucking Cadbury bunny, but the Skittles critter is the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long time.

Add this to the list of other weird Skittles commercials and you have some seriously entertaining (but seriously odd) candy commercials.

Snickers Superhero

snickers_home_bg.jpg

As I’m sure many of you know, companies produce different versions of their products for different parts of the world, and along with that, comes different advertising campaigns that we’ll never see. Thanks to the Internet, localization is pretty easy to get around so you can enjoy the weirdness that other countries get and you miss out on.

Take for example, the above picture. A superhero based on the Snickers Candy Bar. As far as I can tell, (based on Google’s translation) the above character, named Super Olli, is available and willing to help you do all the menial tasks that you don’t want to do. There is an application for you to fill out to request Super Ollie’s help on whatever you desire. It appears he has already helped out a floral designer, so you could be next!

The whole thing seems to be in cooperation with ProSieben, which is Germany’s largest television station. So if he comes to help you, you may also be appearing on the channel, but I’m not entirely sure. Sorry, I have no German skills.

In addition to the awesomeness of the picture above, you can also download video clips of Super Olli, ringtones, and wallpapers. You can also see a German Snickers commercial featuring a different Superhero saving a commuter train, and you don’t even need to understand German to get the joke.

If I have any details incorrect, I apologize. German-speaking readers should feel free to correct me.

(Editor’s note: I think I found my Halloween costume for this year!)
