Ferrero Rocher. Ferrero Rondnoir. Ferrero Garden Coco. They just sound fancy, don’t they? And make no mistake: they certainly are.

The Mercedes-Benz of drugstore candy, the Ferrero Rocher is a dreamy ball of chocolate-hazelnut bliss; a porcupine of deliciousness with a crunchy hazelnut heart and a gooey chocolate center, all wrapped up in a golden wrapper that says, “I am something very special.”

The golden wrapper signifies something very special, indeed. You have to be special to rock a golden wrapper. In fact, you can’t get away with wearing a golden wrapper unless you are:

a. Awesome
b. In a dance recital
c. Someone’s wacky Great-Aunt Helen on Christmas Eve
d. Ferrero Rocher

Kinder Surprise Egg

I used to love Cracker Jacks. Actually, let me clarify – I loved the prizes and the peanuts (which were too scarce, if you ask me), but the caramel corn? Not so much. Really, what’s not to love about a sweet treat accompanied by a little surprise?

Imagine my delight, then, when I discovered the Kinder Surprise Egg, a hollow chocolate egg with a surprise in the center! The Kinder Egg, manufactured by Italian confectioner Ferrero, originated in Italy in 1972, and since then the toy prizes have become coveted collectors’ items.

Candy Review: Ferrero Rocher

Ferrero Rocher
The Ferrero Rocher is part of a long and varied history of the Ferrero company, started by Pietro Ferrero in 1946 in Alba, a small town in Italy. Dear old Pietro had no idea that his confectionery would end up being eaten by chocolate lovers all over the world, although if you believe the marketing blurb, that was his plan all along.

It was news to me that the Ferrero company is also behind such classics as Nutella spread, Tic Tacs and the Kinder chocolates! Really, that just makes me like them all the more. The Ferrero company is one of the largest confectionery companies in the world, and to this day remains a family business run by the Ferrero sons. Officially launched in 1982, Ferrero Rocher as a product is sold in over 100 countries around the globe – although it took until 1985 for Rocher to be distributed in the US.

A good look around the official Ferrero Rocher site brings up some fun facts – that the Ferrero company purchases approximately 25% of the world’s supply of hazelnuts, and that one weeks’ Rocher production would cover the area of 16 football fields.
