PEZ Museums Honor Decades of Candy Fun

Burlingame Museum of PEZ

If you’ve ever doubted the popular staying power of PEZ, a quick Google of those three letters will put to rest any doubts about PEZ’s popularity. Everything from PEZ books to PEZ art to PEZ clothing (here’s my favorite PEZ tee) pays homage to the little plastic dispensers that first took the world by storm in Vienna, Austria in 1927.

One of the coolest PEZ sites I’ve found is the Burlingame Museum of PEZ Memorabilia. The site is loaded with pictures and information, and has an online store complete with a directory for easy shopping. Hundreds of dispensers, from characterless “regulars” to cartoon likenesses, are on display at the California-based museum. The site has a cool interactive picture of the PEZ collection, and you can click on different rows to zoom in and check out Daffy Duck, Hulk, Bullwinkle, and just about any other dispenser.

PEZ Stem Tshirt

We mentioned PEZheads – The Movie (a PEZ documentary movie) previously, and now they’ve opened up pre-orders for the DVD, set to ship in September.

PEZheads – The Movie is a documentary about PEZ and PEZ Collectors. It explores the phenomenon of PEZ collecting through interviews with a variety of collectors and vendors, as well as visits to conventions, the PEZ factory, flea markets, and anywhere else we can find PEZ.

This documentary highlights the fun and quirky aspects of the hobby, as well as the community and the friendships that develop around it. It explores the PEZ phenomonon from the viewpoint of non-collectors and collectors alike, as well as collectors’ families and friends.

This movie is for the PEZhead in all of us. So whether you’ve never purchased a PEZ dispenser in your life, or your house is full of PEZ, you will be fascinated by the people and places you’ll encounter in this documentary.

To be honest though, I am more excited about their new PEZ stem t-shirt (seen above). Wear it and your head becomes the head on a PEZ dispenser (from the front and back). Pure genius! I’d love to see a picture of someone wearing it. They also have two other unique PEZ t-shirts that are both on sale – one is $10 and one is $12. They are nicely done too, but I think I’d spend a few bucks more and get the PEZ stem shirt, personally.

PEZHeads: The Movie

PEZHeads: The Movie is an in-the-works documentary about the tiny candy loved by many, PEZ. The filmmakers are asking for help from you, the PEZ-loving community as a whole. They’re looking for photos of you doing things that involve PEZ – eating PEZ, buying PEZ, or doing anything involving PEZ.

Here’s what they’re looking for specifically, from their website:

  • Hunting for PEZ – shots of you at yard sales or flea markets
  • Old photos – home photos, vacation photos, road trips of you, family or friends w/ PEZ. If there’s a story behind it, let us know.
  • Convention Photos – fun or sentimental photos from the first Cleveland conventions to the present. Also, toy show photos containing PEZ
  • Home Collections – you in front of your collection or you with your favorite PEZ or shots of “PEZ rooms.” Be creative! Be fun! The crazier the photos the more likely we are to use them.
  • Anything else – the PEZ photos old or new that you would love to see documented for all the world to see.

Wall to Wall Candy

PEZ Spaceman Art Print

If you’ve ever wanted to wallpaper your house with candy, AllPosters.com can provide almost any picture you want. They sell art prints, photographic prints, and mini posters of everything from sugar-coated gumdrops to psychedelic PEZ. Some of the art is also available as magnets and note cards.

I found nearly 200 candy-themed images, and yes, I took time away from cleaning the house to look at all of them. AllPosters will frame, mount, or laminate almost all of their stuff, and when I ordered a poster from them a couple years ago, they sent it in a hard, protective tube that saved it from Postal Service abuse. Their framing prices are competitive, and playing around with colored borders and different frames and mats is super fun.

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite, but the PEZ Spaceman is my first choice. The 16 x 20 art print is $14.99, and obviously the price increases with framing and mounting. Now I have a new reason to work my day job—to surround myself with pictures of the candy I love.

PEZ Keeps On Truckin’

Wal-Mart PEZ

PEZ products and I are not strangers to the aisles of Wal-Mart, so you can imagine how excited I was to cruise through a Super Center and find a limited edition dispenser in the shape of a Wal-Mart 18-wheeler. The rig is passably authentic, and according to the back of the package, my 94-cent truck is one of only 300,000.

I chose a package with lemon, strawberry, and raspberry candy, but there were several rigs that came with other flavor combinations. I haven’t decided if I’ll open the plastic and roll the rig around my dining room table, or if I’ll keep it untouched for my collection of random candy paraphernalia, but I’m definitely going back to Wal-Mart to buy another one. Four cab styles are listed by the Burlingame Museum of PEZ Memorabilia, and now that I know what to look for, I’ll be on the hunt.

Wal-Mart’s not the only company with a PEZ rig. Walgreen’s also slapped its logo on a couple of PEZ trucks – I wonder if your store has to start with “Wal” to have a PEZ truck? I don’t know if any of the drugstore rigs are still available at Walgreen’s, but it’s worth a drive up the street just in case (Editor’s note: I saw some at my local Walgreen’s last week).
