Catch a Candy Virus

Candy Viruses

Have you caught this season’s winter cold yet? Personally, I’m working on my second, but if you’re feeling short on viruses, you can order a flavored batch of Candy Virus. The boxes come in three varieties—The Cure (grape); The Epidemic (apple); and The Virus (strawberry). All three are advertised as “tangy pebbles” and come in clever shapes like skulls, a cartoon virus character, and stuff that looks like it would be found on the microscope slide of a very ill person.

I’m not grossed out by Candy Virus, but I am intrigued as to what made someone decide to manufacture such a product. Then again, when you compare the viruses to our Top 10 Grossest Candies, those little boxes of sickness seem light-hearted and even pleasant.

Oddly-Named Candy: Crack Candy

Crack Candy

We at Candy Addict do not condone the use of illegal drugs, but we’re still dedicated to bringing you the oddest in candy names, which is why this strawberry-flavored Crack Candy caught my attention.

Crack Candy comes from China, and I can only assume that there is some sort of Engrish “this word doesn’t mean what you think it means” thing going on. Judging solely from the picture, I’m guessing that this is a variation on Pop-Rocks. Look how happy the disembodied mouth and tongue are – and they’re surrounded by tiny, multi-colored, firework explosions! I’m sure that the land of the pork-flavored postage stamp could easily come up with something comparable to Pop-Rocks.

Oddly Named Candy: Picnic Hedgehog

Picnic Hedgehog

The guys at The Sugar Revolution have found another candy we can add to our ever-growing list of oddly named candies — this one is the Picnic Hedgehog. The reviewers of this curiously dubbed product say that milk chocolate smothers peanuts, chocolate fudge, biscuit pieces, caramel and wafers in a 45g bar.

The Sugar Revolution writers say they purchased the Picnic Hedgehog for $1.75 at 7-11, but they live in Australia, so don’t expect to see it in your local 7-11 (unless you happen to live in Australia, of course). According to this page, Picnic Hedgehog was the 60th most popular candy in Australia for the past four months! If I can ever find one of these, I’m definitely buying it. Not just because I like all the ingredients, but because who can resist eating candy called Picnic Hedgehog? And you have to love the slogan for the Cadbury Picnic bars: “Deliciously Ugly.”

On a totally unrelated note: Cookie Dough Kit Kat! (found while researching Picnic Hedgehog)

Oddly-Named Candy: Wiener Nougat

Weiner Nougat

I came across this one today while looking for something else – I swear I wasn’t googling “wiener” at work! I thought it was pretty funny, at least as candy names go. Manufactured by Fazer, a division of the Midco Company in Italy, this humorously-titled product is a combination of cocoa, sugar, and almonds.

From Wikipedia:

A totally different nougat type is called “Wiener (Viennese) Nougat”, or, in German, “Schmelz-Schokolade” (molten chocolate, because of its mellow consistency), which contains only sugar, cocoa butter, almonds, and cocoa mass.

I can’t trust any candy with the word wiener in it, despite the fact that the ingredients and the description make it sound like a “wiener”. (Yes, that was bad, but it had to be done.)

The Candy Wrapper Museum

Mr. T Candy Wrapper

Today I came across an interesting candy website: The Candy Wrapper Museum. It’s a purely online creation of Dawn, who began collecting wrappers as a teenager and has now brought them to the masses. Her collection ranges from the commonly available to the oddest finds imaginable. I personally enjoyed the Mr. T Bubblegum; I bet that gold chain has really appreciated in value!

If you’re looking for that odd candy you just can’t quite remember, or if you’re just hoping for a fun romp through the highs and lows of candy wrapper art, this is definitely a site you’ll want to visit! The CWM was even featured on TV on the Food network’s show Unwrapped!
