Candy Review: Lollipops from Blanton’s Candies

Blanton's Candies Lollipops

On a recent vacation in southeastern Tennessee, in which I must have wandered starry-eyed through at least a dozen fudge and candy shops, I kept bumping into these Lollipops from Blanton’s Candies. When I’m on the prowl for new sweets, lollipops don’t often register on my “intriguing candy” radar, probably because I prefer to chew my hard candies rather than suck on them. I find the crunch much more satisfying than the dissolve. But these lollipops caught my attention because of their beautiful, shiny appearance.

I loved the bright, cheerful, whimsical colors. When I picked one up for closer inspection, I noticed that all of the sticks were printed with the name and address of a local Tennessee candy company, Blanton’s Candies. I always like to try locally made treats, so I decided to sample a few of these lollipops. I had my choice of perhaps twenty varieties, but I picked only four: grape, orange cream, cotton candy, and candy corn.

Are cake pops the new blow pops?

Cake pops

(Image from 1FineCookie.com)

As I am not the second coming of Betty Crocker, I’m thankful for baking enthusiasts out there who concoct new ways to get baked goodies and heavenly desserts into my belly. Even better? Using candy as a vehicle to further encourage consumption of said goodies (not that you need extra motivation). For example: cake pops. Haven’t heard of them? It’s exactly as it sounds — cake on a stick, like a blow pop, but instead of a gum-based center, you get a moist mouthful of cake.

Name That Candy: Pineapple Knight’s Jousting Weapon Lollipop

Question Marks

Recently, we had another reader who was stumped about a candy she remembered and came to us to help figure it out. Here is what Rosario said:

Can’t find this lollipop. It has three flavors the largest flavor was pineapple, then sour apple and the smallest amount of cherry. and it was cone shaped.

Ok, that’s not a lot to go on so I interrogated her and got this in the next email and then it was clear what she remembered:

  • Approximate year you had the candy?1988-91
  • Was the candy purchased individually or in a pack/bag of multiples? individually
  • What was the wrapping like? Colors? Designs? Paper? Foil? etc…… i think that it may be clear wrapping, plastic.
  • What was the size of the candy? Individual pieces? a bar? etc. If i remember right it was about as long as a regular size snicker bar, and the circumference of the end with the paper stick was about the size of a quarter, the other end was smaller then a pencil’s erasers. It was shaped like like a knights jousting weapon.
  • The the main flavor was pineapple, then something green and down by the paper stick it was red.

Has anyone else figured it out?

Tootsie Pops “How Many Licks” $50,000 sweepstakes!

Tootsie Pops How Many Licks Sweepstakes

I love Tootsie rolls. Absolutely love them. I also like Tootsie Pops, but have pretty much always considered them a hassle because I have to wait so long to get to the delicious Tootsie Roll. Despite all the trouble, I’ve never passed one up. So, when some angel at work brought in a ginormous box of them, I was freakin’ thrilled. Free Tootsie Pops at work? Can this place get any better? Incidentally, yes, because when that box was gone, miraculously, another appeared.

Back to the point of the story – the folks at Tootsie Roll are having a “How Many Licks” to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop sweepstakes. Enter to win $50,000 or free candy – I did! I’m not gonna tell you what my guess was because I don’t want to influence your guess, but I suggest you do a little experimenting yourself. I was less than successful and stopped at about 142 licks – how many can you do?
