Candy Review: Paul Pape Chocomiis

Paul Pape Chocomiis

Last year we brought you news of Paul Pape’s adorable Valentine Chocolate Miis. This year we got the pleasure of reviewing some of the early just-off-the-press samples!

There have been some design changes since last year – apparently, some of the Miis didn’t arrive in great shape, so now they’re on a slab of chocolate to help them stay in one piece. The heart, which last year was a red hot, is now a smaller sugar heart (yay – I hate red hots!). Of course, to a Candy Addict, the most important thing is that they’re still 2 solid ounces of gourmet milk, dark, or white chocolate.

The box is designed to look like the popular Wii game console; in fact, it looks so eerily similar, I’m thinking of sticking it under my TV so all my friends think I have one. Oh, wait, people would actually have to come to my apartment for that to work. OK, I’ll stick it under there so I think I have one.

Candy Review: Fannie May Cubbies Bar

Cubbies Bar Wrapper

In case you don’t remember, the Chicago White Sox won the World Series in 2005, sweeping the Houston Astros four games to none.

The Chicago Cubs recently won the World Series, too, in 1908, when they beat the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Yet, when I stopped into my local grocery store earlier this year, what did I find in the Fannie May case but a spiffy looking chocolate bar named Cubbies. Interesting, I thought. Maybe I’ll try a White Sox bar. I dug through the case. But, wouldn’t you know it? No White Sox bar.

There are two kinds of White Sox fans in Chicago. Those who support the Pale Hose and don’t pay much attention to the Cubs and those who really hate the Cubbies and wish them nothing but the worst.

I’m one of those second kind of White Sox fans.

Candy Review: Reese’s Crunchy Peanut Butter Cups

Reese’s Crunch Peanut Butter Cups

The first thing my little sister said to me when I told her that I scored a gig reviewing candy went something along the lines of the following:

“So what sort of candy are you going to give me?”

I had not even written my first review, and she was already trying to milk the perks. Being the good, older brother that I am, or maybe just feeling guilty remembering all the stuff big brothers put their little sisters through when growing up, I send her care packages every now and then with candy.

When we spoke several weeks ago, I inquired if she had received my latest shipment. She told me she had and continued to explain how she disliked everything I sent her. Mind you, she and I have very different ideas of what constitutes tasty when it comes to candy.

She did explain that as a candy reviewer, I was letting down the general public and her by not devoting enough time to Reese’s products, her all-time favorite. I tried explaining that there were simply no new products to review. This fact failed to placate her. Knowing the wrath a little sister could release, I picked my battle and told her the next time I saw a new Reese’s product, I’d not only review it, but also send her a box of whatever it was.

Candy Review: Expired Limited Edition Candy Part III – Reese’s Big Cup with Caramel & Nuts

Reese’s Big Cup with Caramel and Nuts

The last of the three expired limited edition pieces of candy I purchased from the Dollar Tree Store was the now defunct Reese’s Big Cup with Caramel and Nuts. Honestly, I don’t remember hearing about them when they were out.

Also being frank, I wasn’t too thrilled to get my hands on these any more than I am with any new candy that presents itself. At least with the Hershey’s Special Dark Raspberry Flavored Macadamia Bar and 100 Grand Dark Bar they sounded appetizing. But a Reese’s Big Cup? With caramel? And with peanuts?

Candy Review: Twix Dark and Triple Chocolate Minis

Twix Dark and Triple Chocolate Wrapper

Everyone has their comfort candies they return to from their childhood. They are the sort of candies that aren’t gourmet by any means, but something you have enjoyed for so long that life without them would just seem strange. For some that candy is Snickers, Milky Way, or 3 Musketeers; for me, my heart has always belonged to Twix.

There is just something amazing about chocolate and caramel over a cookie. I can’t rationalize my love for this bar. I dislike most popular candy bars thinking they are too sweet or use inferior ingredients; however, as much as I pretend my mouth is a sophisticated tool of discernment, it craves these things.

You can therefore appreciate my excitement when I saw a Twix Minis Mix bag at Target, specially designed for autumn. It featured the classic as well as the Limited Edition Dark Chocolate and Triple Chocolate bars. I hadn’t tasted either of those in years and couldn’t wait to sample them again.
