Mike’s Candy Wrappers

KitKat Mocha

I think many fellow Candy Addicts would agree that candy is a sensory experience. There’s the rich smells, tastes and textures of the confection. The sound of the crunch of the nuts/taffy/crisped rice and last but not least the gorgeous sight of the wrapper holding the treasure within. I find myself loving the candy packaging almost as much as the candy itself, with its bold colors and large lettering. I started to save my favorite wrappers and packages partly for the beautiful design and partly for the memento – proof that I once consumed this particular candy.

I used to think my habits strange until I found Mike’s Candy Wrappers webpage. This man is a genius, taking wrapper collecting to a new level and thus humbling my own. On his page you’ll discover scores of wrappers all listed alphabetically. It’s really fascinating to see how some have changed over the years. You can even click on the wrapper to see a large version, as well as the date purchased and Mike’s personal commentary on the candy itself. It’s really fun to learn of his candy tastes based on what he’s written. To top it all off, you’re able to make comments too. So if a certain wrapper sets off a wave of nostalgia, you can share it with everyone. Definitely a page you won’t want to miss out on!

Oh – and we used quite a few of Mike’s Candy Wrappers (with permission) in our Candy Wrapper Alphabet Quiz (thanks again, Mike!).

The Battle of Helm’s Deep, Candy-fied

Helm's Deep, in Candy

I love candy, and I’m a big fan of all things Tolkien, so this project made me giddy with delight. It’s the climactic scene of The Two Towers, where Men defend the bastion of Helm’s Deep from horde after horde of invading Orcs. Missed Manners (with the help of a bunch of family and friends) recreated the whole battle in candy. I don’t quite know why, but do awesome ideas like this ever need a reason? It’s Tolkien! And candy! It’s both!

Gummi bears and Sour Patch Kids represent the bodies, Tootsie Pops represent the siege equipment, and Jolly Ranchers were stacked up to portray the walls. That one representative picture above doesn’t do justice to the entire sugary diorama. You’ve got to check out all the photos for yourself.

The Battle of Minas Tirith is on tap next. I cannot wait. Now I feel completely inadequate as a Lord of the Rings geek. What can one recreate with half a bag of Starbursts?

Candy Photos From Craig Kanarick

Big Rounds I, 2004 by Craig Kanarick
(Big Rounds I, 2004. Limited edition of 3 48×48 prints, $2500 each)

We here at Candy Addict try to cover all aspects of your addiction, and while you can’t actually eat these photo prints, you can hang them on your wall in all their candy awesomeness. Created by New Yorker Craig Kanarick, these photos are expertly posed and arranged. They go far beyond a simple product shot style photo, and are more of portraits of candy.

He has nearly 60 different photos to choose from, so he probably has your sweet tooth covered. Prices are a bit steep for me at $850 to $2,500, but maybe there’s some readers out there that don’t spend all of their money tracking down limited edition Kit Kats and Hershey Kisses like I do.

Yesterday was an awesome candy day

Let me just tell you how awesome yesterday was. First, I got an email from a Public Relations person representing Masterfoods’ candy brands (Masterfoods make M&Ms, Snickers, Twix, Skittles, etc.) and he was giving me a press release and introducing himself.

Then, a few hours later I got an email from a PR person from Nestle/WONKA doing much the same. WONKA! One of my favorite brands since I was a kid! She promised to send me samples of their latest candy too!

Do you know how cool it is to get emails from candy companies like that and to know that my little candy site is being noticed by the big boys of the candy biz? It’s like getting email from your favorite music group or your favorite movie star. Too cool.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to gush like that and I promise I won’t do that much, but I just had to share!

Whiz Candy – An Oddly-Named Candy from Yesteryear

Whiz Candy

I posted a link a while back to a scanned 1949 candy salesman book that is just incredible to look through. While browsing the pages I noticed the above ad for Whiz “The best nickel candy there iz-z” which fits nicely into our growing collection of oddly-named candy.

Check out this awesome “commercial” for Whiz from 1938 that advertises a “Party and Magic Stunts” book you can get for just two Whiz wrappers and 6 cents in coins or stamps! It’s awesome in its classic black-and-white cheesiness. Take a look at the candy too – it looks like a chocolate hamburger patty. I guess they changed the shape and packaging by 1949.

Maybe back in the 30′s and 40′s Whiz wasn’t another word for liquid human waste, but nowadays a candy named Whiz definitely wouldn’t fly. Of course, I wouldn’t think Candy Scabs, White Chocolate Maggots, or Dr. Windbreakers Candy (chew one and do one) would sell either, so who knows?
