Quick Candy Reviews

Chocolate Covered Sugar Babies

Lots of quick candy reviews, not worthy of their own posts, but worth mentioning…

  • Looking for Slammers this weekend, I found Hershey’s Whoppers Milkshake milk instead and tried it. It really does taste like a malty milkshake only it’s not frozen, just cold. It is SUPER sweet – too sweet really. The 14 oz. bottle of thick milk serves two but who drinks half a bottle? Oh, and you don’t want to know how much fat and calories are in this thing.
  • I also ran across a new Limited Edition candy I had not heard of before so I picked up a box: Chocolate-Covered Sugar Babies. Overall, I wasn’t impressed. The chocolate was waxy and just like the chocolate on Milk Duds. The chocolate slid off almost totally at the first bite and never really mixed with the caramel of the Sugar Babies. If you like Sugar Babies, stick to the original.
  • I also tried a Milky Way Ice Cream Bar. Oh yeah. Just as good as the Snickers Ice Cream Bar. Fan-freakin’-tastic.
  • I ate a Cadbury Twirl Friday that my wife picked up for me at the World Market. It’s a British chocolate candy that is very smooth and has lots of layers running the length of the roll. It has a bit of an odd taste to it at first but it ended up being pretty good. I recommend it if you like the distinctive taste of Cadbury chocolate.
  • Wrigley’s Extra Watermelon Gum is really good. It has a great watermelon taste and really does last extra long.

Sam Adams Chocolate Bock

Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock

Samuel Adams, beer-brewer extraordinaire, now has chocolate beer. Actually, they have been brewing it since 2003 and it’s a limited edition brew so that’s probably why I haven’t seen it at my local grocery stores.

As with all Samuel Adams brews, Chocolate Bock is made with only the finest ingredients including an exclusive blend of Scharffen Berger(R) cocoa beans from Ghana, which enhance its aroma and the flavor of the two-row pale malt, as well as Munich, caramel, and chocolate malts. This combination of malts with Tettnang and Spalt hops, creates a rich, dark, and satisfying brew. A hint of vanilla is also added to help meld the symphony of flavors together and create a full-bodied taste with a smooth, velvety finish.

It comes in a large 750 ml amber bottle with a specially embossed pewter label and retails for about $15. I’ve never really liked beer much, but this Chocolate Bock sounds really good. After reading the reviews at MyLifeIsBeer.com I really want to try it.

Poking around, I found there are actually a few different breweries that make chocolate beer. I’m going to have to start looking for some of these.

Slammers – Wow in a bottle

Milky Way Slammer StarburstSlammer 3 Musketeers Slammer Moon Pie Slammer

While in my local gas station mini mart today I noticed a new product (new to me at least, I don’t frequent gas station mini-marts much). They are called Slammers. They’re essentially flavored milk. The store had Orange and Creme Starburst and Milky Way, but they also come in 3 Musketeers and even…gasp….Moon Pie flavors. I didn’t try either one since I only had $2 cash on me and didn’t feel like buying a drink I might not like. I went with the old standby – Yoo-Hoo.

Back to Slammers….here’s the Starburst description from the website:

The Bravo! flavor team has captured the actual taste of Starburst® candy in a rich, creamy smoothie, loaded with the nutrition of milk. Now you can get all the great flavor of Starburst® in a delicious good for you fruit & cream smoothie! It’s like a big bottle full of your favorite fruit chew flavor!

Maybe the orange tastes like an Orange Julius – that would be awesome!

Milky Way:

Now you can drink one of life’s simple pleasures, new Slammers® Milky Way® chocolate milk. Frothy nougat and chocolate taste that’s been an American favorite for over 90 years, now in reduced fat milk that’s fortified with vitamins A and D. So it’s great tasting and good for you.

The Milky Way actually sounds pretty good. I’ll be over there tomorrow….I might have to pick one up (assuming I have some cash on me).

Moon Pie:

Moon Pie® Slammers® comes in the most popular Moon Pie® flavors, Banana and Chocolate, in delicious 2% milk.

Is it just me, or does Moon Pie milk sound NASTY? Despite living in the South, I’ve never actually had a Moon Pie (and never had the desire to).

Candy Cocktails

Candy Cocktails

With the new year celebration coming up soon, I thought I’d post some mixed drink recipes that either taste like candy or feature candy in the recipe.

Don’t forget to use some Cocktail Candy on those rims!

My favorite is the Tootsie cocktail – simply because it is amazing how much it tastes like a Tootsie Roll – and you wouldn’t think it would since the main ingredient is orange juice!

Space Dust – Sizzling Candy

Space Dust

I totally forgot about Space Dust til I saw this post by Dan over at A Sampler of Things (which we have mentioned before). I have no firm memories of it, but I do recognize the packages – it came out in the 70s. It was like Pop Rocks only…dustier. I don’t remember Cosmic Candy at all though.

From Nostalgia Central:

Space Dust came in orange or strawberry with a picture of the moon on the front of the packet. Space Dust was almost uncontrollable when combined with Pepsi, Cresta or Coca-Cola. Has been known to explode out of the nose and made a right mess.

Non-candy side note: What is Cresta? from cream.org:

CRESTA (1960-80s) Best remembered for the ads which far outlasted the drink in public memory. A “cool” polar bear in shades (a cross between the more debonair Glacier Mints bear and Den Hegarty) was sent into paroxysms of ecstasy after one taste of this over-sugary, over-foamy beverage of various flavours. “Rimsky Korsakov! It’s frothy, man!” Not any more, it’s not.

I’ll admit, I have never heard of Cresta before.
