Review: Fizzies – they’re back!

fizzies.jpg

I first found out about Fizzies a few months ago when I saw that Old Time Candy was announcing that “Fizzies are back!” I’d never heard of Fizzies – should I be happy that they are back? What are they? Why did they leave? They sound fun!

With a little investigation, I found out that Fizzies are tablets that you drop into water to create flavored, bubbly water – think of it as flavored Alka-Seltzer. They were very popular in the 50s and 60s. In fact, in 1968 they generated approximately $90 million in sales!

Miller unveils chocolate beer

Miller Chocolate Lager

While not the first chocolate lager on the block (we’ve covered Sam Adams Chocolate Bock previously), nor the first to combine candy and alcohol (see Skittlebrau and Atomic Fireball Cinnamon Mead), Miller is giving chocolate lager a try. The Frederick Miller Classic Chocolate Lager is made with cacao nibs, which contribute to the satisfying chocolate flavor.

Miller will be releasing the beer this winter in the Midwest US for around $6 for a 4 pack. Classic Chocolate Lager will be available from October through December 2006 in six Midwestern markets; Chicago, Wisconsin, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Valparaiso/Northwest Indiana.

–Editor’s note: I tried chocolate lager once – it tasted like beer way more than chocolate. Since I don’t like beer much, I didn’t like it.

Deep-Fried Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola
(AP photo)

If you’ve been reading the site for a while, you know that I love cola-flavored candy and I am nuts about deep-fried Snickers. Now, someone has come up with an idea that combines the best of both of these. At the Texas State Fair (the same state fair that brought about the corn dog), vendor Abel Gonzales Jr. has concocted Deep-Fried Coke.

Gonzales deep-fries Coca-Cola-flavored batter. He then drizzles Coke fountain syrup on it. The fried Coke is topped with whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry.

Does that sound good or what? Sounds like it’s a Coke-flavored funnel cake. Yum! I hope it reaches the NC State Fair this year. If not, I’ll have to go for the deep-fried 3 Musketeers or maybe the deep-fried Twinkies or Oreos.

Mythbusters do Mentos and Diet Coke PLUS win free Mentos Schwag

Mythbusters

On Wednesday, August 9th, 2006, one of my favorite shows is taking on the Mentos and Diet Coke phenomenon. Yes, Mythbusters does Mentos and Diet Coke. It should be loads of fun seeing the Mythbusters take on it.

In this episode Adam and Jamie are trying to figure out the theory behind the chaos when diet cola and mentos mix. Inspired by an internet phenomenon The Mythbusters take on the controversy surrounding these fizzy fountains.

Mentos Geyser contest

And speaking of Mentos geysers, Mentos themselves has wholeheartedly embraced the Mentos fountain and now has a contest up at http://www.mentosgeyser.com. Submit your best Mentos soda geyser video and you could win a year’s supply of Mentos, 1,000 iTunes downloads, or other great prizes. The best part – everyone who enters gets a free Mentos cap, towel, or t-shirt. A free candy t-shirt just might be enough to motivate me to give it a try.

Even if you don’t feel like making a video, you can drop by YouTube and browse through all the latest entries to the contest.

World Market Candy Finds

World Market

I stopped by the local World Market a few days ago and scored some great candy that I have mentioned before. I went there looking for the Nintendo Power Mints I mentioned recently and found those for $2.99. I also picked up some Duff Beer Mints for $1.99. Both mints are peppermint and not really worth noting, but I bought them both for the containers, not for the mints. Maybe I should start collecting cool/interesting mint tins.

I also spotted (and bought) some Cola PEZ refills which David reviewed a while back. I was excited because I had been looking for them for ages. Turns out they aren’t as good as I was hoping. The cola flavor is there, but subtle, and there is a bit too much sodium bicarb in them for my taste. I probably won’t get them again, but I’m glad I finally go to try them.

Anyway, if you ever get a chance to go to a World market, drop in and check out their candy section – it’s awesome!
