Candy Review: Caffe Acapella Coffee Bars

Caffe Acapella bars

I’m one of those weird people who loves the taste of coffee but don’t really drink the stuff. I’ve never understood the wonderful alchemy, that captivating mixture of sweet and bitter, which constitutes the perfect cup of coffee. I gleefully eat coffee-flavored hard candies and I’m often compelled to wander into a Starbucks to order a Frappuccino.

So I come into this review with an eager palate. Caffe Acapella claims to have created the first “coffee bar,” a tantalizing mingling of coffee and chocolate wrapped into a gourmet candy bar. They were kind enough to send over a gift set of their products to us for this review.

The first thing I noticed about all the varieties was the smell, tantalizingly rich and a little bitter. It was like walking past a coffee place, but without the dozens of people waiting in line for their morning caffeine fix. Here’s a breakdown of the four flavors offered by Caffe Acapella, along with my impressions of each.

Candy Review: Chargers Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans

Chargers

Eating a coffee bean sounds a little weird at first, but when you coat it with dark chocolate and a candy shell… a whole new world can open up to you. Chargers Candy sent me a free sample of one of their battery-shaped tins of Chargers Chocolate Espresso Beans (“Get Charged”), and I am really buzzing while I write this.

First off, the packaging is really cool! I love it. A red and black battery is a great idea for the packaging of a caffeinated coffee product. I like coffee and I like chocolate, so I was really looking forward to trying these out.

All of the candies are bright, energy-filled, red. I started by popping one in my and suckling it to taste the candy shell. It tastes a lot like an M&M. Then I started to taste the chocolate. I was somewhat surprised to find that it was dark chocolate. The chocolate quickly melted and I was left with a naked coffee bean in my mouth. Then the thought occurred to me, “Maybe I should have just chewed the whole thing together. This might not taste good by itself.” I bit down. It wasn’t as bitter as I expected, but I did get a ground coffee flavor in my mouth.

Next, I grabbed 2 Chargers beans and popped them in my mouth and chewed. Much better. Dang good too! The coffee beans don’t taste bad (when they have candy and chocolate on them). I have had bad milk-chocolate covered beans before, but there wasn’t a bad bean in this bunch at all. Next thing I knew. I had finished the whole battery-shaped tin of them.

These would make great stocking stuffers for the coffee lover in your life or anyone that loves coffee and chocolate. The packaging is cute and the product is tasty. Now, I’m all buzzzzzy. Too bad I need to go to bed in an hour.

Candy Review: Buzz Bites – Chocolate Energy Chews

Vroom Foods Buzz Bites

Another in the crowded, but still-growing field of caffeinated candy, Buzz Bites by Vroom Foods (maker of Foosh Mints also) combine caffeine, B vitamins, taurine, ginseng, and other ingredients into what they call their “Proprietary Synergistic Energy Blend”. Just how how much caffeine do they contain? 100 mg per chew, which is roughly the equivalent of 1 cup of coffee. Each tin comes with six chews, so you get six cups of coffee worth of caffeine in every tin.

I tried one when I was feeling a little tired and sluggish, and honestly, I didn’t really feel any different. Maybe that’s because I already ingest a lot of caffeine on a daily basis though. I was surprised that these chews were so…chewy. They’re not really solid, at all, I expected them to at least have some substance. They’re actually a bit softer than a Tootsie roll.

There’s not very much to savor, as they are gone in a minute or less. They also tasted a little bitter to me. Well, bitter isn’t really the best word for it, they have this weird taste under the chocolate that I can’t really describe. They’re definitely not sweet, they’re just sort of ho-hum chocolate tasting.

So, as a candy, they just don’t deliver, but as a caffeine stimulant, they might be just the thing for you given that each one contains a cup of coffee’s worth of caffeine and no worry of spilling hot coffee in your lap. They’re great for those times when you need a caffeine buzz but can’t get to any coffee. The taste does have a weird, bitterness to it, but you mostly get used to it after eating a few and you’re not eating these for the taste, honestly. The maker of Buzz Bites says the bitterness is actually from the caffeine itself since caffeine is very bitter. They have so much caffeine you can taste it!

Candy Review: Jolt Caffeine Energy Mints

jolt_mints.jpg

Everyone remembers Jolt Cola, they hyper-caffeinated cola, right? Besides making Jolt Cola and Jolt Gum, now you can get Jolt Caffeine Energy Mints. The Mint Flurry flavored mints contain caffeine, guarana, and ginseng to give you a quick energy pick-me-up whenever you need it. Five mints equal the caffeine content of one cup of coffee and each tin contains 45 mints so a tin is 9 cups of coffee worth of caffeine.

The mints themselves are roughly the size and shape of an M&M and are off-white with a Jolt lightning bolt embedded in each one. They are very tasty too – probably the best tasting caffeine/energy mint I have had yet. The mint flavor is very nice – it reminds me of many of the “cool”/”icy” gum flavors that are out right now. The minty flavor doesn’t last long after the mint is gone, and because they’re tasty, it’s easy to eat five in a row to get the coffee cup’s worth of caffeine.

The mint’s texture is not quite as gritty as an Altoid, but not as smooth as an Ice Breaker. It lands somewhere in between and is just a little bit chalky like a Tums, but not overly so. Overall Jolt Mints are surprisingly good and since they are so tasty, I have no problem recommending Jolt Mints to anyone.

Deep-Fried Coca-Cola

If you’ve been reading the site for a while, you know that I love cola-flavored candy and I am nuts about deep-fried Snickers. Now, someone has come up with an idea that combines the best of both of these. At the Texas State Fair (the same state fair that brought about the corn dog), vendor Abel Gonzales Jr. has concocted Deep-Fried Coke.

Gonzales deep-fries Coca-Cola-flavored batter. He then drizzles Coke fountain syrup on it. The fried Coke is topped with whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry.

Does that sound good or what? Sounds like it’s a Coke-flavored funnel cake. Yum! I hope it reaches the NC State Fair this year. If not, I’ll have to go for the deep-fried 3 Musketeers or maybe the deep-fried Twinkies or Oreos.
