Candy Review: Toffifay

Toffifay
Exotic treats are not what you commonly expect to find on the candy rack of the local gas station. And though exotic might be a bit lofty when describing Toffifay (known outside the US as Toffifee), its unique nature compared to its store shelf neighbors definitely makes it stand out.

I recall first running across this Storck product when I was young. I wasn’t a very big fan back then of toffee (unlike today) and avoided this odd confection at first. But the curious looking box the candies came in intrigued me, particularly the beautiful rendering of the candy on the front of the package that didn’t appear to be toffee-like at all (which it’s not).

Imagine my surprise the first time I opened the package. The box is open at the top with paper enveloping all sides. Once you push your thumb through the paper and pop open one side of the box you discover a golden plastic tray hiding inside with four inch-wide cups each containing an individual Toffifay piece.

Easter Candy Review: Nerds Bumpy Jellybeans (aka Giant Chewy Nerds)

Nerds Bumpy Jellybeans

I know, I know, more jellybeans (I just reviewed the Starburst Sour Jellybeans), but can you blame me? When you find the right jellybean, it’s the perfect combination of crunch and chew and sugary goodness! So, when Candy Addict’s very own Brian professed that Nerds Bumpy Jellybeans are his favorite Easter candy this year, I knew I had to try them. First, if Brian says they are good, then the probability that this is true is extremely high. Second, I am a fan of Nerds, especially of Nerds rope, because you get that crunchy and chewy dual bang with the rope. Do you see where I am headed?

I won’t keep you in suspense – these Nerds Bumpy Jellybeans are keepers. They are kooky and bizarre and incredibly tasty! There are five flavors. The flavors aren’t listed on the packaging, but you can guess that they are the usual suspects: red (strawberry), yellow (lemon), orange (you guessed it, orange), green (watermelon), and purple (grape). As indicated by the descriptive title, these beans sport bumpy exteriors, which makes them a little odd looking and even a tad ugly, but who cares! They rock! The hard candy shell is crunchy but won’t break your teeth. The interior is chewy but smooth, and there’s a perfect balance between crunch and chew.

Easter Candy Review: Reese’s Peanut Butter Egg

Reese's Peanut Butter Egg

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are amazing, there’s no question about it. Who doesn’t have happy childhood memories of indulging in rich, peanutty treats at Halloween, birthday parties, or pressed into Christmas cookies? Yet most would say that Reese’s doesn’t reach its apogee of peanut-butter-goodliness but once a year; hold onto yourselves, Candy Addicts, for Reese’s Egg season is upon us.

That’s right. When the rest of the world watches for blossoming flowers and baby ducks, true Candy Addicts know Spring has arrived when the supermarkets stock a certain type of egg. An egg that promises sheer joy and decadence, all for under a dollar.

Candy Review: Chocolate Dipped Strawberries from the Chocolate Covered Company

chocolate covered berries

OK, confession time: did you forget your anniversary? Show up empty-handed to a birthday party? Hey, nobody’s perfect… but if you showed up empty handed on the big day and your better half was a good sport about it, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook! In fact, it seems to me to be all the more reason to show your someone special that you appreciate them.

So, I’ll make this very simple. Here’s how true Candy Addicts can score big – even if it’s a few days late. Go to the Chocolate Covered Company’s website. Click on the Chocolate Covered Berries (or any of the other tempting categories that strike your fancy). Order. Bask in the adoration that’s sure to follow when your Beloved opens that box of luscious little gems.

Seems like everybody’s dipping stuff in chocolate these days, but Candy Addicts know that there’s a real skill involved in making the perfect chocolate-covered strawberry. I cannot stress this enough: the Chocolate Covered Company has got the skills to pay the bills. They use an ultra-creamy, velvety-smooth chocolate. You get to choose milk, dark, white, or any combination of the three. More importantly, the chocolate is slightly soft and fudgy, so it doesn’t snap and crumble when you bite into the berry. Nobody wants to have to pick up the shards of chocolate midway through enjoying a decadent treat, right?

Candy Review: Delacre Crepes au Chocolat

Delacre Crepes au Chocolate Closeup
It’s not often that I eat a candy which leaves me speechless (unless you count an Atomic Fireball or something which causes pain and renders you mute). My Mom brought me a box of Delacre Crepes au Chocolat from the US and after eating only one, I knew I had finally found my first candy worthy of the CandyAddict.com Awesomely Addictive candy award.

The Crepes au Chocolat are a wafer-thin layer of crepe, folded over itself and then dipped in chocolate. I tried the milk chocolate variety, but they also come in dark chocolate. About the size of a small lighter, the crepes have a gorgeous, crispy texture. They taste a bit caramelized – similar to hand made waffle cones. It almost tastes like someone has pounded a waffle cone into wafer thin pieces and then dipped it in chocolate.
