Candy Review: Terra Nostra Organic RiceMilk Choco

Terra Nostra Ricemilk Choco Bar

Terra Nostra is a chocolate company that produces a line of high quality organic and fair trade chocolates that have a little something for everyone. I was introduced to Terra Nostra’s wonderful chocolates while at the All Candy Expo earlier this past year. What specifically caught my attention about this company’s chocolate was their line of bars made with rice milk. This was a big discovery for me considering I’m lactose intolerant. It’s exciting to see that dietary concerns are now being addressed in chocolate!

The first bar I tried was the Ricemilk Chocoâ„¢ Bar with Dark Truffle Center for a few reasons. First of all, I wanted to see how the chocolate itself tasted and since dark chocolate technically shouldn’t have dairy in it, I figured this bar was a good way to introduce myself to the flavors of Terra Nostra’s products. My other reason? Well, it’s simply that I prefer dark chocolate. Before tearing into my new treat, I glanced at the wrapper and was pleasantly surprised to find that these bars are also vegan.

The dark chocolate in this bar is sweet and earthy with a very odd aftertaste. It took me a bit to figure out what the flavor was and I eventually identified it as olive oil. The smooth truffle filling layered in the middle is very thin and I found it only provides a textural component to the bar. It doesn’t taste any different from the “normal” chocolate that surrounds it. The texture is smooth but greasy and overall I didn’t particularly like it. I found it diminished my enjoyment of the bar, which is a shame since the chocolate is really nice on it’s own. The truffle center doesn’t do it for me.

Candy Review: Medlow Fine Fruit Gels

Medlow Fine Fruit Gels

When I went to the All Candy Expo I saw all sorts of candy, from the simplest hard candies to the newest, most progressive gourmet chocolate bars. Out of all the candy I saw and tasted while I was there, some of best were the Medlow Fine Fruit Gels.

I have something to confess: I have a special soft spot for Pate de Fruit. Yes, I love chocolate with all my heart, as well as retro candies and other sweets that I have no need to mention. I swooned over the Pate de Fruit samples sent for my Charles Chocolates review, and some may remember my love for the Whole Food’s variety. There’s something about the simplicity and sophistication of this classic candy that just makes me go weak in the knees. So my discovery of the Medlow Fine Fruit Gels at the Expo was one of the many high points of the trip.

Candy News: Vehicle Runs on Chocolate BioDiesel Fuel

Chocolate BioDiesel Truck

A car running on chocolate fuel sounds like something out of Willy Wonka, doesn’t it? I can assure you that this fantastical sounding story is true: a group of UK researchers took a month long trip driving their way to Timbuktu in Mali, West Africa in a truck that runs on Chocolate biofuel. How cool is that?

The purpose of this chocolate powered vehicle was to raise awareness of alternative fuel options and to help eliminate carbon emissions. According to the article the fuel was made with waste chocolate from a manufacturer. Unfortunately, it doesn’t specify what the “waste” exactly is, but I’m curious to know what sort of chocolate would be considered “waste.”

I don’t know about you, but in the future I’d consider buying a car that ran on chocolate. That is until I ate all the chocolate and couldn’t get to work as a result. Oops.

Candy Review: Jelly Belly Dark Chocolate Jelly Beans

Jelly Belly dark chocolate jelly bean

I’m sure all you jelly bean fans are excited to hear that Jelly Belly is adding a new variety to their official 50 flavors Jelly Belly Bean family. Can you guess what it is? It’s dark chocolate!

I’m find this addition very interesting, because Jelly Belly already has some chocolate based flavors: milk chocolate and chocolate pudding to be exact. I was curious to see how they managed to, in the form of a jelly bean, make one “chocolate” flavor taste different from the other. The press kit included with these new Jelly Bellys says these new beans are dairy free and certified OU Kosher, so it’s good to know that they are safe to consume for those of us who have dietary concerns.

The beans themselves are very attractive to look at: matte dark brown in color, not spots to them at all like some of their Jelly Belly Bean siblings. When I tore open the packet to let the new beans tumble into my hand, I noticed a wonderful strong cocoa smell, yet it doesn’t entirely remind me of chocolate. The first thing that came to mind was tootsie roll; but no, it’s not quite that either. After sniffing and pondering the aroma for awhile, I realized what it was: hot chocolate mix.
