About Heather

Wherever Heather goes, there is bound to be candy in some form or fashion. If you are having sugar withdrawls, just look for her. She always has some tucked away nearby. New candies intrigue her, old candies charm her. Much like candy, her wardrobe is colorful and fun despite the fact she is 31! She enjoys cosplay and anime, and has a soft spot for the 80\'s. Since Japanese culture fascinates her, she loves to get her hands on quirky Japanese candy (though does her best to avoid eating dried sea creatures). Her love of sweets inspired her to want to create a site where she could review candy and share her ideas about the things she likes. After some searching, she discovered \"Candy Addict\" and it was love at first site! (Hee.) Random fun facts: Location: Florida Favorite subject in school: English RP weapon of choice: various candies + slingshot! Favorite event: anime conventions Favorite flavor: banana or strawberry (but NOT together!) Flavor disliked: hot cinnamon Latest fascination: the Japanese band An Cafe (or Antique Cafe). \"Apparently it\'s really hard to get their CDs in the U.S...\" v_v

Candy Review: Bubu Lubu

Bubu Lubu

While visiting my family in Illinois, I spotted this intriguing bar at a Hispanic grocery store we shopped at. The bar with a cute name was average-sized and average-priced, so I picked it up to try it out! After searching online, it looks like Mexican grocery stores are about the only places you’ll find these.

Ricolino’s Bubu Lubu is a chocolate bar with a layer of strawberry-flavored jelly and a layer of marshmallow. It’s what you would expect from a jelly and marshmallow-filled chocolate-coated bar. The jelly is a nice tangy strawberry flavor, and the marshmallow is spongy and sweet. I can’t help thinking I’ve had something very similar, perhaps on Easter years ago. Despite the fact that it reminds me of Easter, I think it would be fun to give to your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day, just for the cute name!

Candy Review: Muddy Bears – Chocolate Covered Gummi Bears

Muddy Bears

Gummi bears are pretty much irresistible and chocolate is a cherished treat. When I spotted a box of chocolate-covered gummi bears”, I felt excited and had to give them a try!

The box says, “New! The original Muddy Bears chocolate covered gummi bears”. I should have known something was amiss when it said ‘new’ and ‘original’ in the same breath. They are by Taste of Nature, Inc. even though they are quite unnatural…

Sadly, the chocolate is surprisingly thin and not very flavorful. The gummi bear itself isn’t a defined taste, either. Mostly, I was sitting on the couch making all sorts of faces, trying to decide if I liked it or not. They’re not horrible… but they aren’t tasty, either. Perhaps if a better chocolate was used, they could be like a chocolate treat with a fruity center. These just end up tasting odd.

Muddy Bears Out

Above is a picture to show what they look like out of the box. I squinted, trying to convince myself they resembled a bear a little tiny bit. I really wanted to like these, but they were only as desirable as their name.

Candy Review: Vertigo – Candy & Chocolate Flavored Pops

Vertigo Bag

Name brands don’t influence me to buy things. Flashy packages, tempting images, a cute cartoon face or a really cool name… those are things that grab my attention. This isn’t the best logic, but it’s the way I am. You can imagine my expression when I discovered Vertigo. The name alone makes me imagine colorful Cheshire cats with swirling eyes and giant grins!

Vertigo are new chocolate lollipops from Topps. They are already on the shelves at various locations (I first spotted them at Wal-Mart for about half a dollar each). They are a fusion of two great candies: one side (about 3/4 of it) is a perfectly rich chocolate and the other side is a swirled hard candy. They come on a sturdy brown plastic stick that matches the color of the chocolate so well that I thought the stick was edible, too. (They aren’t.)

Vertigo comes in three flavors:

Chocolate/Cookies & Cream: First sensation in mouth: Mmmm… Creamy, delicious flavor. Very smooth texture. It’s hard to resist biting into the chocolate side! It’s a creamy chocolate that melts on your tongue nicely (if you lick at it). The candy side is truly delicious. Once I finally nibbled/licked/bit off the chocolate side, the hard candy side is left. Now that I’ve disassembled the shape, the flat top edge presses against the roof of my mouth. It rests better beside my cheek.

Chocolate/Caramel: Just what you’d expect in a caramel flavor, only tangier. The flavor isn’t quite as good as the Cookies & Cream flavor, but still good. The pops last a long while if you don’t bite them.

Chocolate/Strawberry: I purposely saved this one for last. I knew this would be the best! It tastes like it was made with real strawberries! It’s amazingly good. This would be awesome after a nice dinner.

I definitely recommend these to everyone!!!

Editor’s note: I tried these too and I agree – they are really good. The chocolate is much better than I expected and provides a nice contrast to the hard candy. I can’t imagine anyone not liking these.

Retro Candy Flashback: Wax Lips

wax_lips_and_wax_fangs.gif

When I look at the popular line of Bratz dolls, all I can think of are Wax Lips. The over-sized flavored lip-shaped wax that magically seemed to release a tasty juice when you chewed it up. Did they really turn into gum or did I just chew the wax so much that it seemed like it? How fun were these? Loads of fun! You could instantly become a superstar without Botox or a costly cosmetologist! A superstar in your own mind, perhaps. In any case, Wax Lips could transform you. They made kids confident and loving, pretending to pucker up for anyone within ten feet of them.

Wax Lips have a sort of “bit” on the back that you can slip between your lips to wear the wax lips. If you got excited and bit through that part, your fun was significantly halted. All you can do without the back piece is hold them up to your lips with your fingers. So, training yourself not to bite the back part off was a proud talent. Wax Lips used to be at all the dime-stores when I was a kid… Where have they gone? You would think with all the big-lipped dolls, they’d make a comeback.

Wax Lips were invented by the American Candy Company in the early 20th century (whoa!). Concord Confections, Ltd. picked them up in 2002, and then Tootsie Roll Industries picked up that company in 2004. The lips are now called “Wack-O-Wax” which, to me, makes them sound like a horror movie. I suppose if you were a boy on the other side of those lips, it would be like something out of a horror movie. The more boy-friendly version of Wax Lips is Wax Fangs – lips with fangs!

Who Put The “Six” in Sixlets?

Six Sixlets

As I was enjoying the tiny chocolate essence of Sixlets one day (see our Sixlets Flashback for more Sixlets info), I wondered how Sixlets got their name. I counted the colors… Orange, yellow, green, brown, and red. That’s five… I counted the candies in the package. More than six. I counted the ingredients. More than six. I looked over the nutrition facts. Not a “6″ in sight. Why on Earth are these candies called Sixlets? For some reason I can’t explain, I felt compelled to know.

I looked at the plastic package again. “Questions or comments about this product?” Oh yes. I called the toll-free number. Oddly enough, I never could get a human being on the line. Eventually, I shrugged and hung up. I noticed the website on the wrapper. http://www.hersheys.com/.

Perhaps I could find the answer there. Though I had a wonderful time browsing through info about other delicious Hershey’s products, Sixlets were nowhere to be found. I e-mailed them my query. I received a basic “thank you for your e-mail” message, but that was all.

I was growing desperate. Was there no history to be found about the Sixlet? I began e-mailing companies that sold Sixlets online. The ones that replied were very sweet. (No pun intended.) I got a lot of apologetic “I have no idea”s and “good question”s, and even a couple that said if I do find out, to please let them know as well! Even a search on Wikipedia returns minimal information.

Old Time Candy states, “We have been told that they are called Sixlets because originally they came six to a package.” Is this true?

I also mentioned Sixlets to a friend who lives in Canada, and he had never heard of them. I thought that was odd but not very odd, since he is in another country. However, I mentioned them to my co-workers, and a few said they had never heard of them, either! Holy smokes! I had no idea Sixlets were so elusive! They always seemed to common to me as I was growing up.

Even now, as I look at the empty wrapper, I am in awe of how mysterious they are. When were they originally created? Was the name significant or was it just a trick to get your attention and make you wonder? If it was just to get attention, it certainly worked!
