Name That Candy: Colorful candy disks

Question Marks

We love to hear from our readers, so we jump at the chance to help out a fellow Candy Addict. We received an email from Al who was curious about a certain candy from his past and wondered if we knew anything about it. Well, of course we all know that curiosity is a cat killer and, in addition to candy, we like cats, too. So we’re saving the kitties and posting Al’s plea here to see if anyone can help.

When I was a kid in the 50′s, my parents bought this candy in boxes, about 12″ long x 1.5″ X 1.5″. The top of the box had a clear cellophane window through which you could see the edges of the colored candies inside. The candy was in the form of a disk, about 1.25″ in diameter and very thin, maybe 0.125″. The top of the disk was smooth and the edge curved down to the back which was ribbed. The disks were easily broken as the make-up must have been almost pure crystallized sugar. The box had about 5 colors and flavors ranging from orange (orange), to yellow (lemon), to green (wintergreen?) etc. etc.

Does anyone else remember this candy? Let us know!

Candy Review: Ritter Sport Chocolate

Ritter Sport

I love everything about Ritter Sport chocolate. I love that it’s a family-owned business since 1912. I love the cheerful colors of the wrappings. I love the squareness of the bars. I love that there are so many unique flavors – Butter Biscuit, Yogurt, Milk Chocolate with Strawberry Creme – and regular Dark and Milk chocolate, too. Most of all, I seriously love the taste of this chocolate. It’s all incredibly good! I’m talking, “I want to try every variety ever made and will hunt for them across the globe”, obsessively good.

Candy Review: U Oughtta Be On Chocolates

U Oughtta be on Chocolates

What’s better than chocolate? My face on chocolate! Or your Grandma, favorite pet, or company logo on chocolate. U Ougghta be on Chocolates is just the company to make that happen. The nice folks who run the company took a few of my cherished photos and presto magic- they’re now 100% edible! They look great -even better than in my photos here- and made a great impression with my extended family who was delighted by it. We talked about how my Grandma never would have imagined she’d ever see herself on a chocolate one day. I think I was the favorite grand-kid that day! Grandma on chocolate

Candy Review: Simply Lite Milk, Dark, and Dark Chocolate with Almonds

Simply Lite Chocolate

It’s been many years since I last tried sugar-free chocolate, for good reason… it was disgusting. I would rather have had no chocolate than gross chocolate. I guess one of the many things that have improved with time and technology is sugar-free chocolate. Simply Lite’s Milk and Dark Chocolate bars are all the evidence I need to know science is awesome.

Now, sugar-free does conjure up some negative feelings to some folks, myself included. I’m not going to get into a philosophical debate about sugar vs. sugar-free, but I have been privy to concerns being raised about sugar substitutes. So many concerns that my little mind – tuned in by all the marketers trying to sell us the next best thing – was a little curious about the ingredients. I read the nutritional packing with some scrutiny and red lights started a-flashin’ when I read the warning “excess consumption may cause a laxative effect”. But, like all things, excess can cause long-lasting effects, no? Moderation, they say wisely. So I threw a little caution – along with a wrapper or two – to the wind because I did, of course, need to eat some of three different bars to tell my little tale of Simply Lite chocolates.
