Before I even tried Mars’ Fling, I was already smiling. The wrapper says “Naughty, but not that naughty.” Oh really? Do go on. The website explains that though the Fling is made of “premium chocolate” this little pleasure won’t make you feel too guilty because each finger of the Fling is only 85 calories.
Well, the packaging is fun and the concept is intriguing, but how’s the flavor? I tried two kinds of Flings: the milk chocolate and the hazelnut.
Each finger looks similar to a Twix, so I was expecting that kind of crunch and consistency. Wrong! Airy, whipped chocolate rests on a very light, brittle honeycomb-like bar, and then the whole thing is coated in chocolate. When I bit into it, the Fling snapped and crunched audibly. But the crunchy bit isn’t anything like the cookie crunch of a Twix – it’s hard to explain the texture except to say that the whole thing is really, really airy. I found them really fun to eat – unusual, and interesting.
But don’t think that the airy texture means the Fling is light on flavor. Both the milk chocolate and hazelnut flavors delivered with plenty of sweet, creamy chocolate taste. The hazelnut flavor snuck up more on the finish than in the initial bite, but then the flavor lingered, extending the experience past the final bite.
Overall, the Flings were fun to eat. They were satisfying without being heavy. Check these out if you want a rich snack without a lot of calorie guilt.
Hi Cadence, I’ve had them too, soooo delicious!!
June 5th, 2009 at 10:09 amHershey’s Fling is basically marketed for women who are looking for a delicious chocolate treat without having to worry about calorie content. The packaging is also cute, with the pink wrapper. I tried a couple of Fling bars already, and they really taste good.
But candy and chocolate manufacturers should probably stop developing products that are gender-based and are suggestive of what is good and bad for women, in particular, to eat.

June 6th, 2009 at 2:28 amCandy companies using sex to sell just like everything else in the world… worked on me.
I’m going to try one.
Despite the bizarre & perhaps insulting marketing on them, they’re tasty candy and rather different from other candy bars. (I didn’t like the hazelnut ones though.)
Where did you get yours? They were being test marketed in Southern California, have they gone national now?
June 7th, 2009 at 12:35 pmI freakin’ LOVED these things. Happily, my loot bag didn’t have the hazelnut variety, so I got to have two of the milk chocolate types. They were FABULOUS. Light and airy yet a great chocolate kick. I found myself feverishly digging through my small haul to see if I could dig up another bar. Alas, I couldn’t, but I’ll definitely be looking for these when they get a nationwide rollout.
June 7th, 2009 at 1:31 pm@Cybele, I picked some up at the ACE and gave them to Cadence, so I don’t think they’re national yet
June 7th, 2009 at 1:42 pmI must say that the marketing people at Mars are good. It’s one thing to target the female market for something so risky as a chocolate bar, especially in this age of responsible eating, and another to label it the way they did… with just enough hint of sexuality.
June 9th, 2009 at 12:32 pmUsually I avoid anything that hot pink like the plague (seriously, the packaging looks like some kind of meal-replacement bar rather than chocolate.) But I’m hoarding my ACE samples like gold. They’re just so crisp and light -they make a Twix look like a brick in comparison. I really hope they eventually make it this far north.
June 10th, 2009 at 11:33 amI love the dark chocolate ones. Every time I take a bite I feel guilty, because they taste so good! I’m in New Yok and get mine from he local bodega. But they seem to be the only stor that carries them.

March 12th, 2010 at 6:27 pmWE LIVE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. WE WERE ABLE TO BUY FLING DARK CHOCOLATE IN LOCAL STORES LIKE RITE AID AND WALGREENS. HOWEVER WE CANNOT FIND ANY MORE TO BUY RECENTLY. WHERE CAN WE BUY A CASE OR TWO OR THREE OF THOSE FLING DARK CHOCOLATES? WE ARE EVEN WILLING TO HAVE THEM SHIPPED TO US FROM OVERSEAS AND WE ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR THE SHIPPING COSTS. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW WE CAN GO ABOUT BUYING A FEW CASES OF FLINGS (DARK CHOCOLATE OR MILK CHOCOLATE)…ANYWHERE OUT THERE IN THE VAST WORLD?
