Candy Review: Sour Patch Chillerz

Sour Patch Chillerz

I was pretty excited to snag a sample pack of these new Sour Patch Chillerz at the All Candy Expo. Excited – yet conflicted.

You see, while Sour Patch Kids are one of my most favorite candies ever, and the thought of a new flavor variety fills me with joy, these ones promise a “cooling effect.” That usually means the presence of menthol, which is definitely one of my least favorite flavors. It never fails to make me think of cough drops, especially when combined with any kind of fruit flavor. “Burning throat pain” is just not a sense association I want attached to my candy, thankyouverymuch (unless that candy is an Atomic Fireball, of course).

But nothing ventured, nothing gained – I tore open my pouch of Chillerz (is that “z” really still cool?) and was greeted with a nice fruity scent – with only a very faint whiff of menthol. In this low of a concentration, it was actually – pleasant.

Candy Review: Star Trek Gummies

Star Trek Gummies

You may remember that we mentioned Star Trek Gummies a while back. Well, I finally had my chance to try them at the All Candy Expo and found them delightful.

After introducing myself, a very pleasant gentleman offered to give me a box so I could write a review when I got home. Of course, it turned out that another guy at the booth was completely against the idea – they didn’t have enough, they were sold out, blah blah blah. Nice Guy overrode Mean Guy, though, and slipped me a box so I could revel in the gummy yumminess. (Then he had to tell another lady who wasn’t a preeminent candy reviewer that she couldn’t have any – hah!)

Candy Review: Reese’s, Special Dark, Almond Joy and York Pieces

Hershey's Pieces

To me, one of the most exciting announcements at this year’s All Candy Expo was the addition of three new additions to the Pieces lineup. Never knew there was a Pieces lineup? Well, there is now, with Hershey’s Special Dark, Almond Joy and York Pieces joining the familiar Reese’s. But are these new additions worthy successors to the mantle of everyone’s favorite candy-coated peanut butter treat? (The Hershey’s folks threw in a sample pack of Reese’s Pieces too, so I’m doing a bonus review of those as well.)

All Candy Expo – Part 6

All Candy Expo

(Laurie and me at the ACE)

Now that I have had some time to decompress, I can look back at my great time at the All Candy Expo and share with you what was going on and what I felt really stuck out in yumminess.

The whole Expo just seems overwhelming by nature. I mean, when the three of us met in the press room, there were at least a dozen different products that were “all you could take” just waiting for us to grab, conveniently place by an “all you can eat” ice cream freezer, and this is all in addition to the messenger bag of goodies we got when we signed in.

Candy Review: Woodhouse Butterfly Bars

Woodhouse Butterfly Bar

It’s not often that a candy makes me turn to Google for a definition, but that’s what happened when I got these Woodhouse butterfly bars as a gift.

I got two flavors: lemon pink peppercorn, which I could handle, and “Raz el Hanout.” I am pretty sophisticated about world cuisine, but this was unfamiliar to me.

It turns out that this bar is not, say, named after a famous Middle Eastern pop singer, which was my first guess. Raz (or ras) el Hanout is a spice blend used across the Middle East.

Despite years of eating various sorts of Middle Eastern food, I had never run across this flavor, so I had no preconception about how it would go with chocolate. My prejudice lay instead in my previous experience with Woodhouse Chocolates – I decided in the end that they were more pretty than they were my favorite taste experience. Would these be the same?
