And the Best Candy Cameo Goes To…

Candy Addict is still in transition, but I thought it would be nice to give you something to tide you over. So enjoy and keep watching for our return to full function soon!

Since it’s awards season, I was noticing the marked lack of candy-related awards. I’m sure it’s just an oversight on the part of the various academies. But as a dedicated Candy Addict it’s my job to help remedy that fact.

I’m thinking the category should be something like “Best Use of Candy as a Prop in a Motion Picture or Television.” My nominees are:

Candy Addict Status

Fear not, fellow Candy Addicts. Candy Addict is still alive and kicking. It seems we have outgrown our current server and it’s now time to move hosts. I’ve had to change back to the default look and disable comments for now (comments are enabled on this post for now – til the spammers come). The plan is to find a new host, move the site, and have everything back to normal by Monday, February 23 (assuming all goes well – and it never does).

So, we’re not gone, just having some growing pains. We’ll be back in full soon. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: I (Brian) have had a minor medical emergency and it has incapacitated me for a few days – once I’m recovered I will get the site back up.

Japanese Candy Review: Morinaga Hi-Chew

Strawberry Hi-Chews

My home province of Alberta is pretty much the Canadian version of Texas – it’s full of oil, cattle and guys in cowboy boots who say “Y’all” a lot (well OK, the last one’s mainly just in Calgary). But my hometown of Edmonton, a stereotypically white-bread, conservative, redneck city, has an ethnic diversity that may surprise you. I can eat at restaurants from a couple dozen different cultures and shop at specialty grocery stores from four or five more – and that’s just within a 10-minute drive of my office, which, by the way, is located not in a vibrant ethnic center, but in the blandest suburban warehouse/industrial district imaginable.

I guess where I’m going with this is that even your own town is probably home to all kinds of unlikely and unexpected food and candy treasures – you just have to know where to go to find the good stuff. Take these Hi-Chews, for example. I snagged a couple of packs of this popular Japanese candy from a Korean grocery store located just a few minutes from my office (woo!).

Hi-Chews are known for their intriguingly bouncy, pillowy texture, almost more like gum than North American fruit chews like Starburst. The coolest thing about them is that they don’t stick in your teeth at all, so you’re not picking bits of candy out of your molars for the next half hour.

Candy Review: Peach Smash Now and Laters

Peach Smash Now and Later

After my success with the Pineapple Now and Later, I promised myself that I would approach other Now and Later varieties with an open mind. So spotting a whole display of flavors at a gas station, I was, as Homer Simpson so eloquently stated, “like a kid in some kind of a store.”

Scanning the flavors, I was torn between several, but it soon became obvious which would be the one to try. Peach Smash. Why? First, I love peaches. Second, there are so very few peach-flavored things in the world aside from peaches. Third, I have no idea what a “Smash” tastes like, but if there are peaches involved, count me in!

Candy Review: Haitai Power of Concentration Chocolate

Naver Power of Concentration Chocolate

Let’s be clear; I don’t speak Korean, so I’m utterly ignorant of all the great information on this label, and on a website listed on the can: Naver. In fact, I’m not even sure that Haitai is the name of the manufacturer, but it was the only thing in English I could find that looked like the candy’s maker listed on the label. If anyone can help me out with some translation detail, I’d be glad to learn more. Google didn’t deliver, alas. Automatic translating the Naver page also got me nowhere.

But check out that awesome container! Really, it’s why I bought this candy (well, that and the word “chocolate”…). I mean, it’s shiny METAL, 4 3/8″ high, with a 2″ diameter blue plastic snap lid. If the chocolate inside is as good as the outside, I’m gonna love this candy. And it should be decent at four dollars for 3 1/2 oz (100g).
