Everyone has their comfort candies they return to from their childhood. They are the sort of candies that aren’t gourmet by any means, but something you have enjoyed for so long that life without them would just seem strange. For some that candy is Snickers, Milky Way, or 3 Musketeers; for me, my heart has always belonged to Twix.
There is just something amazing about chocolate and caramel over a cookie. I can’t rationalize my love for this bar. I dislike most popular candy bars thinking they are too sweet or use inferior ingredients; however, as much as I pretend my mouth is a sophisticated tool of discernment, it craves these things.
You can therefore appreciate my excitement when I saw a Twix Minis Mix bag at Target, specially designed for autumn. It featured the classic as well as the Limited Edition Dark Chocolate and Triple Chocolate bars. I hadn’t tasted either of those in years and couldn’t wait to sample them again.
Dark Chocolate
Frozen: The whole piece gives a nice crunch, resembling eating a bonbon that is hard. The dark chocolate is rather potent, a little burning even, which is odd since a cooling of temperature usually abates chocolate intensity. When frozen, more notes of caramel and graham cracker were apparent.
Chilled: The caramel is viscous, but manageable. At a colder temperature, the dark chocolate is much smoother on the tongue and works well to bring out the flavors in the candy. This was my favorite way to consume.
Room Temperature: The dark chocolate possesses a soft flavor with hints of bitterness. The caramel is nice because it refrains from being too sticky or sweet, complementing the juxtaposing crunch of the cookie that isn’t too hard.
Triple Chocolate
Frozen: The bar is hard, with a firmness reminiscent of the crunch in toffee. I tasted a fine grain in terms of texture because this bar is constructed of a chocolate filling rather than the ubiquitous and smoothing caramel a normal bar contains. Despite there being three types of chocolate in here, none were specific enough in taste pick out individually.
Chilled: This version of the bar is riddled with cocoa overtones, as if it were a candy version of Cocoa Puffs. It’s grainy as well, still lacking in any specific chocolate orientation.
Room Temperature: The chocolate center is smooth, soft, and fluffy, almost 3 Musketeers in consistency. The bar has a smoother crunch to it than the other two temperature gradients. Despite still having an indiscriminate chocolate flavor, I liked this one the best.
So there you have it. Two sorta new ways to enjoy the classic. Neither is amazing to me, but neither is bad. The Dark Chocolate essentially fails because the inherent sweetness of a Twix bar achieved via the caramel and butter cookie complements milk chocolate well; dark is too bitter to achieve the same result.
On the other hand, Triple Chocolate suffers from having chocolate which is too nonspecific – neither milk nor dark, it doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be. I still ended up eating the whole bag in about 10 minutes, but you can bet I went through the original the quickest.

I like your three-temperature reviews – it gives a whole new perspective on chocolate bars that everybody thinks they already know. I don’t eat a lot of chocolate bars, but you’ve inspired me to pick up a bag or two of fun-sized bars and try them at different temperatures.

October 6th, 2008 at 11:55 amI bought a bag of these and snarfed them down in like 5 minutes. I thought the dark chocolate ones would be my favorite, but the triple chocolate ones were totally rad.

I once bought the “100 calorie” packs for portion control and ate the entire box!! Twix are my favorite!! BTW, I love this website!!
