I’m fairly certain that I have a condition known as Tootsie Pop Amnesia, where I can go for years forgetting how much I love the chocolaty chew of a Tootsie Pop before someone hands me one at random and all of my happy Tootsie memories come flooding on back.
In college, I ate about 9,009,209 Tootsie Pops. I kept the wrappers tacked to my wall. Whatever it is I thought I’d see, became a Tootsie Roll to me. But alas, after college I moved on to other treats, and left the Tootsie Pop behind. As always, I forgot all about the sweet, sticky, “what flavor is this in the center, I mean, it says chocolaty chew, but really?” delight of eating a Tootsie Pop. So when we hit the Tootsie booth at this year’s All Candy Expo, and I saw an unfamiliar color in the Tootsie Pop dish, I almost had to sit down, as my Tootsie Pop amnesia once again gave way to Tootsie Pop fever, and I was overcome with excitement trying to find out what flavor lay below the new, peach-colored Tootsie Pop wrapper.
On my way to the dish to fish out a pop, I imagined various flavor scenarios: dark chocolate? Cranberry? Tropical? Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the new Tootsie Pop flavor was the oh-so-trendy star of the All Candy Expo: Pomegranate.
“POMEGRANATE?!?” I yelled to no one in particular. Pomegranate?! It was a bit of a shock, coming from a brand as old-school as Tootsie. But pomegranate is the new BIG THING in candy, and it’s showing up everywhere – from gourmet chocolate to Jelly Belly beans, and now to the good old fashioned Tootsie Pop.
The allure of pomegranate comes from its supposed antioxidant properties – though in fairness, I don’t think the flavoring in Pomegranate Tootsie Pops is going to provide you with the antioxidants you’re looking for. Still – these pops are incredibly tasty, and the pomegranate flavor is a welcome addition to the Tootsie Pop family. The Pomegranate Tootsie Pops are similar in a sense to the Cherry variety, though the Pomegranate is juicier and less sugary. Unlike some Tootsie Pop flavors, where the fruit coating jars a bit with the Tootsie center (Orange, I’m looking at you), the Pomegranate is a nice compliment to the Tootsie taste.
Pomegranate Tootsie Pops aren’t truly remarkable, but they’re quite tasty and I hope they stay in production for a while. They’re a nice new twist on an old favorite, and it’s nice to see Tootsie branching out into more unique, current flavors. If you’ve been suffering from Tootsie Pop Amnesia for a while, a lovely Pomegranate Tootsie Pop might just be the thing to break your spell.

i was unimpressed with the pomegranate tootsie pop. i was excited when i found these at the store because i love pom juice and the fruit but i thought the candy was sour and left a lot to be desired, the tootsie in the middle saved it. i imagine if you are looking for something a little less sweet you would enjoy this flavor. there are other new flavors out there. the one that i really liked was lime, but it is very hard to find. i spent two dollars at a donation box picking this flavor out. totally worth it.

I saw a Pomegranate Tootsie Pop sitting in my dad’s car and I thought I’d take it for myself. Wow, best Tootsie Pop ever. I thought Cherry was the best, but I think the Cherr has been dethroned.
September 17th, 2008 at 4:57 pmThese are the best Tootsie Pops I have ever tasted. I scarf 2-3 every time they show up in our candy jar at work!
October 3rd, 2008 at 11:14 amI agree. I like the pomegranate Tootsie Pops the best! They are hard to find. My bag only had one and the big box from Costco has everything else including lemon-lime and watermelon. Wish I could get a whole bag of just pomegranate. Great for the sweet tooth and only 1 Weight Watchers point! WooHoo!
December 3rd, 2008 at 8:48 pmPomegranate are the best flavor tootsie pops ever.
I popped open two assorted bags at target and started taking the pomegranate ones out of one bag and traded them with the chocolate pops in the bag I was going to buy.
I think I might shoot myself if these go out of production. I know they’ve been around since at least Halloween cause my little brother got one then.
December 31st, 2008 at 6:19 am[...] sad that these were not as successful as the Pomegranate Tootsie Pops that debuted last year at the ACE. Lovers of this sort of banana flavor will most likely enjoy [...]
