How do you find your bliss? Hershey’s hopes we’ll all find it in their Bliss Chocolates, and they’re banking on three flavors to satiate our palates. I recently sampled all three – Milk Chocolate, Milk Chocolate Meltaway, and Dark Chocolate. I found that only one of the candies left me feeling blissful.
Each variety comes as individually wrapped foil squares in flavor-specific bags. They all have a nice, chocolaty smell, and the color choices for the foil are appealing. I can imagine a cute display of Bliss squares in a candy dish. Cute or not, I’m most interested in taste.
First up, Dark Chocolate. As non-gourmet dark chocolate goes, the Bliss squares are passably average. There’s nothing particularly special or not special about them. They’re slightly bitter, and, I suspect, unrecognizable in a blind taste-test against several other brands of dark chocolate on the market, although I swear I tasted a hint of Hershey’s Kisses in each bite.
I chose Milk Chocolate next. Again, nothing overly impressive or unimpressive. Also again, that hint of a Kiss surfaced, except the Milk Chocolate Bliss reminded me much more of another candy, and I’m still not sure what it is. I’d go for the Milk Chocolate over the Dark, but could take or leave either.
I wasn’t sure what Meltaway meant, so I saved it for last. Apprehension turned into a reward. The Meltaways don’t have a true “meltaway center” as the package claims (or at least not the way I imagine a meltaway center, which would be something that would seem to disappear in my mouth). Technicalities aside, the Meltaways are darned good. Pretty addictive, in fact. They have a weird texture and are slightly oily, but are very chocolaty and hard to put down. They taste a bit like the Milk Chocolate Bliss, but are softer and don’t have that mysterious Kiss-like hint.
Overall, the most appealing thing about Bliss Chocolates is probably their tasteful packaging. You could set them out at a somewhat fancy dinner party, and they’d go well with the cloth napkins. However, if you want to actually eat your Bliss, stick only to the Meltaway flavor, or find your bliss someplace else.

Victoria, you nailed that review. That is EXACTLY what I thought of them too. The meltaways are pretty good, but the other two are just so-so.

April 17th, 2008 at 11:34 amI just tried these the other day and bought the meltaways. They were absolutely delicious!
April 17th, 2008 at 12:30 pmI saw those in the store the other day and wondered what they were like. Now I can just save my money – thanks!

I’m not a fan of Hershey’s so much as an adult, which is nearly blasphemy since I grew up near there. Still, the Bliss milk choco is quite an improvement in texture over their regular bars. It’s not bad for the price.
I’d still opt for Swiss or German brands, though!
May 8th, 2008 at 2:30 pmOh, sorry, and I had the meltaways, not the bars. They reminded me of Dove chocolates.
May 8th, 2008 at 2:31 pmI’ve gone through two bags of the Dark Chocolate Bliss, and I’ve been noticing that there’s a slight wax or no taste when you first put these on your tongue. For about the same price, I’d have to say that the Dove Dark has them beat.
May 9th, 2008 at 9:29 pmI tasted the meltaways recently and fell deeply in love. Then I noticed a bag of RASPBERRY meltaways on the candy shelf in Target. I love raspberry with chocolate, but decided to wait until there was a sale. I would love to see a review of these! Thanks!
September 1st, 2008 at 10:33 amOk, I managed to get my hands on a bag of Raspberry Meltaways. The originals meltaways had truly swept me away, but these were a artificial, yogurty imitation of the fruit. I had expected the candy to be of higher quality, but this really did not meet the standards I was hoping for. If I hadn’t had such high hopes, I probably would have liked these just fine. The chocolate is very good, and the raspberry flavor is fine, though lacking actual “raspberry-ness.” So these were good overall… just don’t expect it to be great. A bag of M&M’s is cheaper and satisfies just as much!
September 3rd, 2008 at 7:35 pmbought the dark chocolate, reminiscent of charred dark chocolate, no bitterness sensed just over cooked.
February 22nd, 2012 at 7:35 pmThe worst chocolate I ever tasted, it is waxy, doesn’t satisfy at all.
