Candy Video: The Archies Rock Out With “Sugar, Sugar”

Confession: I am a terrible dancer. But whenever I hear this song, my body and my mind separate, and my feet seem to disregard what my brain keeps telling them: “You have no rhythm! You have no style! Stop moving! Stop it!”

But alas, there is not enough brainpower in the world to keep me from dancing around to one of the best songs ever: the Archies’ “Sugar Sugar”, the catchiest, peppiest, greatest shout out to candy girls the world has ever seen.

I honestly can’t think of anything better than a song about sugar, sung by a cartoon band, with a music video that involves Veronica dancing in front of what looks like super-powered floating salt water taffy, and Betty with an X-Men like ability to turn Archie into a bunny rabbit through her kisses.

I don’t know exactly what’s going on in this video, Sugar Sugar, but I do know that it is awesome and I love it, Honey Honey.

I hope you do too.

  1. OMG, such a blast from the past! I used to watch the Archie cartoon show every Saturday morning, back when it was brand new.

That’s not Betty turning Archie into a rabbit, btw. That’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch, another Archie Comics character who was a regular on the show. She was an actual witch with magical powers, which explains all the weird transformations in this clip.

One of the funky things about the musical numbers on Archie was that they always used the identical clips of the band playing and singing and the girls dancing for every song they ever did. The only things that changed were the other clips, like the ones of Sabrina in the kissing booth here. Those usually had some vague connection to whatever the story for the week had been.

The same animation company also did a Brady Bunch series, a REALLY BAD show. And gee, guess what – those kids were also shown as having a band, and the clips were virtually identical to those showing The Archies playing in their show.

    Thanks for the memories!
