Charms Blow Pops recently caused me a “well, DUH!” sort of moment. (I may have even dramatically smacked my forehead!) A recently acquired bag of traditional-flavored Blow Pops had me thinking how similar they were to Tootsie Pops. Hard outside, chewy inside, and a debate between those who chomp their way to the center and those who lick their way there.
So imagine my amusement when I started researching this article and discovered that Blow Pops are produced by… Tootsie Roll Industries. Bruised forehead aside, I was thrilled to eat my way through a bag of these. They taste precisely how I remember them from my childhood. Nothing about them has changed – which is great, given how much I hate it when candy companies mess with perfection.
All the flavors I tried – sour green apple, grape, cherry, strawberry – tasted really nice. Bold artificial fruit flavors, bright colors, yummy sweeter-than-sweet bubble gum in the center. Unfortunately my mixed bag had no watermelon lollipops but it didn’t really matter as I found myself swooning over the others. While my usual favorite would be the sour apple, I found myself falling in love with the grape. It reminded me so much of grape soda – something you can’t really find outside of the U.S. Tangy and sweet, the grape Blow Pop leaves you with a stained tongue and a smile on your face.
If I had one gripe, it’s more one of memory than one of reality – the gum seems so much smaller than it used to be! As a kid the bubble gum in the center was just enough; as an adult it’s a bit on the small side. It still makes fantastically big bubbles, once you’ve chewed the crunchy bits of lollipop out of it. Sweet and fun, Charms Blow Pops remain one of my classic candy favorites.

This is kind of making me drool. But don’t you find that the lollipops totally scrape up your tongue after a while?
February 20th, 2008 at 4:02 pmI just got home from Walgreen’s here in Tucson and discovered 2 different flip-flops with colorful themes of Blow Pops and Dots! VERY cool but too small for me (and honestly, the footbed is a little hard for my tender heels). But hey, BLOW POPS on your feet! Great colors, fun look and cheap Walgreens prices…plus, hey, you can buy tons of Easter candy in there right now…and I do mean TONS! It’s heaven…sigh…

November 29th, 2008 at 10:55 amRegarding Toni #7, I just came online to search for my beloved grape and cherry suckers as I too have no one I know remembering them, they just look at me like…huh? I remember if you had a “winner” sash on the flat side you won a free one.
January 11th, 2009 at 2:28 amThey weren’t made by Charms. I think they came out of Canada. I lived in Northern Michigan and we got them at the Rexall Drug Store. The suckers were shaped like a grape cluster and on the back of the sucker there would sometimes be a wax label that said “Winner”. As I recall, the suckers came wrapped in a waxy paper somewhat like that on Tootsie-Roll Pops, but not the same company. Those were the best sour grape and sour cherry suckers ever!
