Despite the proliferation of talented chocolatiers in the world, I rarely feel blown away by the stunning appearance of a product. A lot of candy looks really cool or is a creative, original idea, but the Mori Ex Cacao (Death by Chocolate) Gift Set sold at Valerie Confections is fascinatingly, macabrely beautiful.
The gift set includes three skulls nestled in an upscale black package, and each skull (at least from what I can see in the picture) looks frightening realistic and intricately crafted. The flavors sound fantastic, too: Scorched Caramel; Bitter Brandied Cherry; and Curious Chili.
The Scorched Caramel skull is made by slowly combining sugar with organic cream over high heat. The Bitter Brandied Cherry skull blends bitter chocolate, Kirsch-perfume ganache, and sour cherries steeped in liqueur. The candy is then finished with white cocoa for a chilling, clean, bone-like look. The Curious Chili skull emphasizes “an eccentric array of chilies and spices” to produce chocolate that heats up the taste buds.
At $65 for the set, these chocolate skulls better taste as good as they look, and from the description of their ingredients, I bet they do. If $65 is too steep for your budget, you can buy an in the flavor of your choice for $25. And, if you have a Gothic love in your life, the Death by Chocolate Skulls might be just the dark, unique gift to give on Valentine’s Day.
SIXTY FIVE DOLLARS??!! Crikey, for that kind of dough they’d best be delivering that fancy black box in a custom antique limo hearse driven by none other than the Grim Reaper himself. Sheesh. Sixty five dollars for three chocolates, no matter how fancy and (I gotta admit this) deliciously creepy-looking, is just so far out of MY reality. But hey, you bet I’d love to try ‘em! (Anyone wanna help a girl out?)
