Candy Review: POP! – Frozen Chocolate and Popcorn

pop_assortment.jpg
I was a little confused when a colorful package from the people at POP! arrived on my doorstep. I’d checked out the website before they were sent, and the product information describes them as a “delectable frozen confection.” It’s true, they arrived beautifully boxed and carefully nestled in foil cold packs But when I opened the box, I found an assortment of fudgy-popcorn treats, not ice cream, as I’d been expecting.

Still, I wasn’t about to turn up my nose to these lovely chocolatey little globes, so I decided to just assume the makers of POP! want me to enjoy them cold (even if they wouldn’t melt at room temp), and leave it at that.

Candy Review: Junior Mints Peppermint Crunch

Junior Mints Peppermint Crunch

I love it when I go shopping for one thing and end up finding something else instead. That’s what happened when I went holiday shopping the other day. I went in looking for a certain gift and ended up walking out with a box of the new Junior Mints Peppermint Crunch. Isn’t the box pretty? I love how festive it is!

Junior Mints and I have a sordid history. As a kid I’d only really have them at Halloween since they weren’t something I’d ask for. Each year when I’d give them a try, I knew why. I was never a big fan of mint and chocolate (although I’m warming up to it now) and they’d always end up in the trash.

Candy Review: Theo’s 3400 Phinney Bars

Theo 3400 Phinney Chocolate Bars

Sometimes you’re lucky enough to have the opportunity to discover a good chocolate or candy right away. Others, it’ll take you time to finally get around to finding them. The latter was my case with Theo Chocolate. Since they’re located on the total opposite coast from where I am, I was so happy to hear that they were to be at the New York City Chocolate Show. I’ve heard wonderful things about their chocolate and I very eager to try it.

Let’s just say I’m impressed with their work. Theo is unique because they oversee their entire production process: roasting, blending and conching in order to coax out the distinctive flavor imparted by each unique growing region. It’s rare that a company has such control and as a result, Theo has won numerous awards for the chocolate they produce.

The Chocolate/Candy Showdown

Snowman Sack of Nostalgic Candy

A few days ago, the four year old I take care of came home with a note in his backpack from his teacher. No, he hadn’t exposed himself or anything like that (he saves that for the home); rather, it was a note to all parents telling them that there would be a holiday party later this week and listing contributions parents should send in. Bear with me as I run down the list:

  • Cupcakes
  • Juice
  • Cups
  • Plates
  • Donuts
  • Cake
  • Chips or Pretzels
  • Chocolate
  • Cookies

At the bottom of the list, double underlined, were the words “NO CANDY.”

Um, okay… I feel a rant coming on!

Heaven forbid we send in some Christmas themed candy with our donuts, cake, cookies, chocolate, and cupcakes! I mean, naturally children should only be allowed to have a sugar high as long as it accompanies a significant chunk of fat as well! Oh, and since when is chocolate not a candy?? Hello?!? What about M&M’s? Are those chocolate or candy? Does a candy coating preclude a chocolate-based confection from being included in a preschooler’s holiday party? I think we need equal rights for all holiday candies!

Deep breath.

Okay, I feel better now. What do you think? Leave a comment and let us know.
