Kinder Surprise Egg

I used to love Cracker Jacks. Actually, let me clarify – I loved the prizes and the peanuts (which were too scarce, if you ask me), but the caramel corn? Not so much. Really, what’s not to love about a sweet treat accompanied by a little surprise?

Imagine my delight, then, when I discovered the Kinder Surprise Egg, a hollow chocolate egg with a surprise in the center! The Kinder Egg, manufactured by Italian confectioner Ferrero, originated in Italy in 1972, and since then the toy prizes have become coveted collectors’ items.

The prizes are created by a team of European designers. For more details (and believe me, there are many) on the various toys see the Wikipedia entry on Kinder Eggs. Add to the intrigue the fact that Kinder Eggs are essentially illegal in the United States – the 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act outlawed the combining of “non-nutritive” objects with confections. The toys are also considered a choking hazard and should not be given to children under 3 years of age.

So the prizes are all good, of course, but how do the Kinder Eggs taste? Delicious! The outer shell is a milk chocolate. Flavorful and smooth, there is no waxiness or other distasteful quality to it. The inner shell is a milk cream concoction, and really, the pairing of the two is a great combination. Because the eggs are hollow, you don’t feel as though you’ve completely overindulged on the chocolate. It’s a perfect little treat. Maybe this is what was meant by the incredible, edible egg?

Please note that Kinder Surprise Eggs are not readily available in the United States. You may be able to find them at import grocers or other specialty stores.

Long time reader, first time poster—because I LOVE Kinder Eggs! I grew up overseas in Germany and this was my all time favorite candy! I still have most of the toys that came with the eggs sitting in the window at my mothers house. Whenever I know of somebody going to Europe I always ask them to bring me back one (or two….or three lol). I always look for them whenever I happen to be in a big city. Thanks for sharing this your readers!

If “the combining of “non-nutritive” objects with confections” is illegal, then how can Nestle sell the chocolate spheres with stickers or toys inside of them? …Oops. I see they pulled them back in 1997 and replaced them with candy instead.

These seem kind of like the American “Wonderballs” that I loved as a kid. It was a hollow milk chocolate ball with a surprise inside, such as character-shaped sweetarts, stickers, or a small figurine. My mom used to buy me one every week when we made a trip to the grocery store. Ahhhh… Good times. Good times.

    A note on finding these:
    City Markets.
They’re all over the city market in KC, MO. 1.50$- I’ve yet to get one, but I’m sorely tempted. I love plastic prizes. And chocolate.

I was really sad when they pulled the toys from wonderballs. I like the sweet tart candies they have in them now, but its just too much to bear in comparison to a possible tiny plastic collectible.

This is what I get for being a kid at heart!

I love these. My mother used to bring them from Germany when she was in the military and went TDY. I adored these. Too bad they stopped selling them at Army Commissaries. Some kid choked on them, so the commissary decided to pull them from their shelves. I’ll have to look these up again :3

They sell Kinder surprise eggs here in Australia.

They also sell Kinder kids chocolate, which is the same stuff (the white cream covered in milk) but its a bar the sixe of your pointer finger (kid size).

Also sell Happy Hippos. BEST EVER. Crispy shell (wafer biscuit) in the shape of a hippo dipped in chocolate and then in little balls. On the inside is the white milk/cream paste, all gooey they are THE BEST EVER.
