Bert and Ernie: Licorice Defenders

Sesame Street has taught us many lessons over the years: how to count in a Transylvanian accent, how crayons are made, and, in this clip, how NOT to share candy with others.

Ernie and Bert are the best of friends, but when Ernie brings home a few licorice whips to share, he can’t seem to divide them evenly. Poor, terrified, pigeon-loving Bert can only stand by and watch as Ernie greedily takes most of the licorice for himself. Why, Ernie? Why? What did Bert ever do to deserve such treatment? Is it the unibrow? He can’t help it! He was glued together that way!

In the end, it appears that Ernie is going to right his wrongs, but we soon find out that his love for licorice is stronger than his love of sharing with Bert, a true sign of a Candy Addict.

The best part of this clip is knowing that both Bert and Ernie LOVE black licorice, a candy that rarely appears on anyone’s (well, except for Caitlin’s!) favorites list.

Leave it to Sesame Street to take something so icky and turn it into something so sweet.

  1. I have been trying to expand my appreciation for black licorice. My son likes it (it is actually the only candy I will share, HA). I ordered a variety pack from around the world from Licorice International because of Candy Addict. There are some GOOD ones…. and some UGH salty ones. I have found that most of the foreign ones are VERY chewy and/or hard.

  2. I think that my mom used to do this to me with my Halloween candy! She’d always inspect it and take out the one’s that looked like the wrappers were tampered with. As soon as I would complain, she would say, ” well, you don’t want to get sick now, do you??”. I could never understand why she wanted to take my candy that could make her sick….of course now that I am older, I realize that she was splitting up the candy a la Ernie! ;)
