September 15th, 2007 at 2:49 pmbtw- John Gilchrist (“Mikey”) is still alive.
Dark chocolate contains about 3 times as much caffeine as regular chocolate. A bar of dark chocolate has about the same amount of caffeine as a can of Coke.
September 17th, 2007 at 11:49 amThanks for this post! It was so awesome! Those rumors have been floating around in my head for as long as I can remember (although I never did hear the one about the jawbreaker). I had totally forgotten about the Tootsie Roll one, but now I remember looking at EVERY SINGLE WRAPPER of everyone I ever ate, and even saving them for a while, hoping to stockpile them and send them all in at once for a mother lode of free candy.
But my favorite one was the Halloween candy one! What kind of paranoia has that rumor sparked! The candy xray at the hospital? Jeeze. I kind of always suspected the same thing as you about crazies finding some way of poisoning the candy if they wanted to. BTW, that one incident of the fater, the pixy sticks, and the insurance money? Wow.
Thanks for this blog! I love reading it. My friends are always amazed that I know about all the new candy hitting the shelves. :)
September 19th, 2007 at 3:31 amI still remember the hallowenn one with my teacher telling us too controll everything we where giving hat special night.
September 23rd, 2007 at 7:27 pmI totally agree about the brown M&Ms. They just seem more chocolatey for some reason. Everyone tells me it’s just my imagination, but they really do taste different. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who thinks so.
October 16th, 2007 at 1:17 amBrown M&Ms do taste different! I miss the tan ones.
This might be the best list I’ve read online in a long time. I remember getting those scary ultra-religious pamphlets from a family down the street every year for Halloween that were chock-full of stories about people who worshiped the Devil and poisoned trick-or-treater’s Halloween candy. We usually threw them all over their yard along with any boxes of raisins or other crappy candy people dared to give us.
October 31st, 2007 at 11:52 pmwell about the whole candy not being dangerous
this happend in my town this year
LEICESTER, Mass. -Police are warning residents of a Leicester (LES’-tuhr) neighborhood to check Halloween candy closely after a young girl found a small piece of metal in a candy bar she got on Halloween.
The girl noticed the object — possibly from a piece of jewelry — before she ate the Nestle 100 Grand bar and reported it to a teacher at her elementary school.
Police Chief James Hurley says a hole in the wrapper of the candy bar indicates the metal was inserted after the candy had been wrapped.
Hurley says it’s being treated as a criminal offense and urges anyone else who finds suspicious-looking candy to notify police immediately.
The girl went trick-or-treating in the area of Henshaw Street, but doesn’t recall at which house she received the candy bar in question.

December 13th, 2007 at 7:23 pmre: Halloween
Okay, so there may not be a documented death, but that doesn’t mean a lot of harm/hospitalization from adulterated candy. I was still trick or treating when the first pixie stix poisoning took place, followed closely by razor blades in apples and other atrocities. I wouldn’t let my kid take candy from any stranger. Just the way things are.

Definitely halloween razor blades.
January 6th, 2008 at 5:42 pmWell, green M&M`s may not get you horny, But they have helped me get two women pregnant, and I do not mean that I did the fun part, it is just that I knew two women that had been trying to get pregnant, so every time I went to see them, (they happened several years apart from each other) so i would bring a small bag bought at the store with me and I would end up eating all the M&M`s except the green ones which I would give to the lady in question, and in both circumstances, they were pregnant within a short time. Thus both the husbands and the wives were quite happy with my services, and NO, this is not a made up story, it is 100% true.
January 8th, 2008 at 1:29 amhello , i am 6 months pregnant and really fancying a chocolate bar , but not just any chocolate bar its got to be a trio . does anyone remember theese and if so where can i buy them from ??????????? please help

‘Another example of an increase effect of chocolate on the body with low amounts of chemicals occurs with threobromine and caffeine. Although threobromine is a weak stimulant, with caffeine these two chemicals can enhance mood. With the interactions of threobromine, caffeine and phenylethylamine the body also experiences an increase in alertness.’
so your roomate claim is true. the caffeine is minimal but the combo is effective. like chocolate and peanutbutter. mmmmm….
February 22nd, 2008 at 3:01 pmMMMM – All I could read in this great article were the words Chocolate, Wine and Challah – all the other words just kinda melted away.

August 16th, 2009 at 4:03 amIt seems to be the wrapped candy and non – candy items that are used…Heh..Kind of ironic, don’t you think?
When I grew up we were told if you got the indian on a tootsie roll wrapper it would bring you good luck. That is what I taught my kids and I am sure they will teach thier kids too!!
August 25th, 2009 at 10:46 ami think its cool and im going to try to prove some wrong
August 31st, 2009 at 10:11 amI heard that people put razorblades in candy!!!!!!!!! CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 31st, 2009 at 10:13 amThe first time I read that the tainted Halloween candy tale was a hoax was in a Family Circle type magazine, in the early 90s. I precisely remember it saying that there was “never a documented case of tainted Halloween candy”. I was shocked. So many ppl refuse to believe that it was a hoax. I have heard that real cases have come up in more recent years. I guess there are ppl that want to prove the rumor right. Also, I wonder if a parent doesn’t toss one they’ve made themselves into their kids loot, to prove they need mom or dad to always check their candy first. Now that, doesn’t shock me at all.
October 1st, 2009 at 4:43 amWHAT?! razoblades in candy! halloooo, people could die! and it wouldent just be like dying, it would be a extremely painfull dead! i simply can`t believe it!
December 23rd, 2009 at 3:07 pmM&Ms now releases sexy Valentine’s bags of all green M&Ms! I was so impressed that they embraced the urban legend. I seek them out every February. And to whoever mentioned them before-I miss the tan M&Ms too.
January 7th, 2010 at 1:03 amGreat article and web site!! Thank you for these candy urban legend so funny! (and very amazing from a french point of view: I didn’t know about the legend of the green MM’s). For the taste-test of the MM’s, did you take the same test on the Dragibus? (or maybe the dragibus only exist in europe?)
March 26th, 2010 at 7:18 pmLast halloween, my cousin found razor blades in her candy… so yes, there are people who do that. Just not everyone hears about it.
March 28th, 2010 at 10:33 amI have heard a lot of these rumors like the exploding jaw breaker, the tootsie rolls, the pop rocks, and the poison on the suckers. I actually used to save the tootsie wrappers thinking I could send them in a get more. My parents also used to check my candy at Halloween to make sure everything looked okay. I have never had and exploding jaw breaker, but I was careful when eating pop rocks, because sometimes they hurt the inside of my mouth.
April 26th, 2010 at 10:55 amThe silly green m&m myth was started by the LMC class of 1980 when they were sophomores in 1977-1978. The myth spread quickly through SW Michigan and beyond!
These sophomores were selling m&m’s for a class fund raiser.
I was their teacher at the time.
May 21st, 2010 at 12:19 am“THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A DOCUMENTED CASE OF HALLOWEEN CANDY DEATH OR INJURY.”
Ok, I’ve never heard of anyone dying from eating Halloween candy, but not one single injury? What sources did you research for this article?
September 20th, 2010 at 2:45 pmThis reminds of the urban myth about FUDGE 44. It was a secret recipe for Fudge in Japan that was invented by two schoolboys. The rumour is they were murdered by multi-conglomerates for the recipe. They made a puppet show about it or something.

January 30th, 2011 at 3:15 pmI absolutely adore Pop Rocks! In fact, i was nicknamed Pop Rocks my my middle school algebra teacher after a series of happenings…they were hilarious. I stumbled upon the official Pop Rocks website, and just had to laugh…and pass it along to all of my friends. XD
November 20th, 2011 at 8:15 pmThis is good. I’ve wondered if someone could really choke to death on a jawbreaker like that movie from the 90s.
