Twizzlers Rainbow Twists

I was scouring a gas station candy aisle for some delicious chocolate confections when a bright red, happy, $.79 package of Twizzlers Rainbow Twists screamed “New!” and “A Low Fat Snack!” at me. Though I generally find plain red Twizzlers dull and rarely buy them, I jumped at the chance to try them in six different fruity flavors (and with only a gram of fat for the whole serving). My chocolate fix could wait.

And these do look delicious. The Twizzlers are brightly colored, opaque and shiny, and my 1.9 oz package contained one each of grape, blue raspberry, watermelon, lemonade, orange and strawberry flavors. I’m not sure how new this candy is, exactly – it’s not listed on the Hershey’s site, and I’ve seen reviews of it dating back to late 2006.

The strawberry flavor is mild, sweet and decidedly artificial tasting, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. In the first bite, there’s a hint of tartness, but that disappeared as I kept chewing. The orange is unremarkable but sweet, and while I normally love lemon flavors, this one was edible yet reminiscent of cleaning fluids.

I didn’t expect to like the watermelon flavor, because I’m not a fan of artificial watermelon flavors, but this one is different – it has a bite to it, but as you chew, the flavor mellows, and in a good way. The blue raspberry was blue, of course, and we all know raspberries aren’t blue, but the bright robin’s-egg shade probably made for a much prettier Twizzlers rainbow. Its flavor is also mild, with a bit of a plasticky overtone. My favorite flavor is the grape, which tastes about as artificial-grape as you can get, like every cheap grape popsicle you’ve ever eaten, but in a good way.

I’d hoped the flavors would be tangier and more apparent, but each one I tried seemed to fizzle after the first bite and give in to the characteristic waxy Twizzler mouthfeel. The bright, colorful package promised me tartness and flavor, and the rainbow Twizzlers did not deliver. They’re certainly more interesting than your garden-variety Twizzlers, but not interesting enough for me to buy again.

I’ve had these before, and I was less than impressed. The after taste is vile for most, and the consistency of the Twizzler is very un-Twizzler like. It’s more mushy and pliable, which I didn’t like.

I agree. They are pretty-looking, but pretty sad-tasting. My favorite of the flavors is the watermelon, but I wouldn’t seek it out.

I think they couldn’t make the flavors stronger because, then they would blend from all being in the same package. I have only seen these in the 1 pound+ size around here.

Gotta agree with you all, the package IS what got me to try them but I was sorely disappointed in the flavor and texture both. Dang, they’re so pretty, too! I’ll get sucked into checking out pretty much anything in a rainbow color scheme, so that got them my money, yup. I wish they’d been really tart and snappy! I won’t eat them again; I’d rather eat something fabulously delicious instead!

I bought these maybe twice last year from the vending machine at work and really only ate them because they were pretty (and there was nothing else that interested me.)
I did like the watermelon one the best, with lemon pretty much tying. The rest were pretty bad though.

I haven’t seen these around here yet but I still want to try them after the bad reviews. They remind me of licorice twist candy that I had was a teenager and I found them one once at a gas station about 3 years ago. They are called fruit twists? I believe and they are not by a popular name brand. THey came in a bag like above but they weren’t assorted they were only one flavor per bag. I think two of the flavors were peach and blue raspberry. The flavor could of been stronger but I really liked the real fruit juice in them. The peach flavor might of been Orange but I remember them being a faint orange color, and the blue raspberry a faint blue color.

Oh !!#$!… I have one in my mouth right now and it’s probably one of the worst things I’ve willingly put in there in quite a while. This one is “orange flavour,” but it has a sort of bitter after-taste. The texture also turns sort of creamy during chewing, which is pretty gross. I think the rest of the package is going in the garbage.

I was also lured in by the packaging, and disappointed by the texture. They lack the firmness of regular licorice sticks, which makes them taste more like gummi candies than licorice.

I can heartily recommend them as straws, however … the same lack of firmness that makes them frustrating licorice impersonators makes them fun & colorful straws, especially for summer cocktails!

I never knew about that kind of candy but i want to TASTE it!!!! *smile*

    Valerie says:

These are disgusting! The texture is not like the traditional red twizzlers, and there is almost no distinction in flavor between the different colors–not to mention that flavor is very chemically.

I tasted them and they are horrible!!! I will never tell anyone to do that again…

I sought out such a forum with the intention of warning others NEVER BUY THESE, THEY ARE NASTY, objectively and absolutely.

    News Report

Marge again i just discovered that the company of Twizzlers are making the candy more healthy and they are making a huge mistake. The candy are being horrible. Even though it is a good idea, it does not fit with the candy. They should stick with the red kind and of they want to change it they should add some more flavor, but it still tastes good… (to be continued)

I agree with everyone who said these were nasty. :(

Can you say nasty? Nice idea, but it definitely doesn’t work. Twizzlers are wonderful compared to this stuff. Two thumbs down.

Omg I LOVE these things! I don’t care what anyone says..I’m obbsessed. My favorites are the blue rasberry, grape, and watermelon..lemon is ok too. But I wish instead of strawberry it was some sorta tropical flavor & it’d be great if the orange was mango & the lemon was pineapple! Yummm…one of my favoritest candys ever..in fact I’m picking up 2 bags @ walgreens 2morrow…can’t resist! The texture soft, shiny, & stretchy & colorful & fruity smelling!

These things are the worst candy I’ve EVER eaten and I’m a sugar fanactic. Horrible taste with horrible texture equals horrible candy. How did these pass taste tests?
We have them at work and no one here can stand them…
    HORRENDOUS

    {Ikay}â„¢ says:

My mom came home with these today. These didn’t taste good at all! But you might start laughing right now…. I am using them as straws. They taste better but they turn like hard candy in pepsi. But they are awesome with cola gushing out of them! Yummmm but I am only testing the grape ones in the cola now. =] You should try! And I am questioning why they turned hard?

    WaterSlide says:

Ever smell grape, watermelon, raspberry, lemon, orange, or strawberry soap? They somehow managed to get that smell into all of these candies.

    Brendan says:

Horrible. One of the worst candies I’ve had in a long time, and I’m normally a big Twizzlers fan. These are so bad, I actually found this forum just to complain.

They’re neither tangy nor tart nor even particularly fruity. Instead, the taste is muddled and chemical-like, and the texture is reminiscent of plastic. You’ll think you’re eating a plastic bar of soap. As if that isn’t bad enough, there’s a strange bitter aftertaste.

Oh, and to add insult to injury, they stick to your teeth.

Wow I wish I had found this review and discussion before I wasted my money on these vile things! I am a long-time candy addict but these Rainbow Twizzlers are the most disgusting thing you could ever hope to avoid.
