Classic Tootsie Pop Commercial Gets a Makeover

I don’t know how many times I’ve imitated Mr. Owl when I eat a Tootsie Pop. Something about his eager “One. Two-hoo! A-three.” piqued my interest from a very young age, which meant that the original animated commercial was extremely effective.

Cartoon Brew, an animation blog, recently discovered that this classic commercial received a 3D makeover. Instead of plain ink drawings on a stark background, everything in the new commercial is extremely detailed, from the ground underneath Mr. Turtle’s feet to the leaves on the trees behind Mr. Owl. Unfortunately, the little boy now looks like a mutated Hobbit.

I’m not sure what bothers me most about the new ad: that they felt they needed to update the commercial or that the result is less than pleasing. I think the appeal of the original had to do with the fact that it looked like something a kid could draw. Sadly, you can’t say the same thing about the new one.

Just for reference, here is the classic version of the commercial:

  1. Ugh. My eyes are bleeding! Another example of why 3D animation is the devil. Or, at least, when it’s done poorly. Long live 2d animation!! (How can you tell I’m in the industry? ;) )

  2. I like some of the 3D animation but the classic is always better! I still can’t understand why all those idiots won’t listen to what the people want and give us back our 2D animation!

  3. This seems like either a fan video, or a demo done by someone in (or looking to break into) the field of CGI. I highly doubt this is something commissioned by the company or meant to go on TV. They didn\’t even clean up the pops and clicks in the original audio.

I see it as an homage done by a fan of the candy. Really, something you should praise on a site dedicated to such things. No need to be so harsh on the animator without knowing the full story.
