Candy Review: Kookaburra Licorice and Mini Pastels

Black Kookaburra

On my return from a recent vacation, I was overjoyed to find April’s Licorice of the Month Club selections waiting for me. This month I got to enjoy Kookaburra black licorice and Mini Pastels. The month’s selections also included Licorice Toffee, but as I have mentioned before, my jaw simply is not up to the task of chewing such confections.

A few months ago we received an extra bonus of Kookaburra black licorice, so I have already mentioned it before. However, this time the sample received was larger, so I was able to enjoy it more thoroughly. As before, I found that it had a wonderful, soft texture. The flavor is very sweet and mild – almost too mild. To my taste, it could have done with a bit more licorice flavor, though it certainly wasn’t objectionable.

Mini pastels

As a bonus, we received a small sample of Mini Pastels. These are somewhat reminiscent of Good & Plenty, though smaller and in a multitude of pastel colors. Their flavor is also much more subtle than Good & Plenty, with a thicker candy shell. All in all, they are very good, though the licorice is nearly lost beneath the sweet candy.

  1. I used to be able to buy Likrits, spelling is probably not correct. It was a licorice covered chocolate, shaped like an m & m. Imported from ? There is an american made candy just like it but the chocolate, IMO is not as good as the imported one. Does anyone know where I can still get some of this. I came in a 2″ by 2″ square box.”
    Thanks, Julia
I am dutch and german and cannot get enough licorice. Girradeli Chocolate use to make a domino decorated box, with all kinds of licorice/chocolate in it. Wish they still did.

  2. Lakritz is no longer being made. It was from Sweden. When Coletta/Fazer/Leaf merged it was one of the candies that was dropped. Sadly. I agree that the Koppers Chocolate is not as good, it is oiler tasting.
