Candy Review: RJ’s Black Soft Natural Eating Licorice

RJ's Black Soft Natural Eating Licorice

During one of my recent attempts to find things to order with free shipping (I got hosed into Amazon’s Prime program), I stumbled across Amazon’s licorice section of groceries. Naturally, I was so happy I was nearly giddy.

Yeah, ok, so I wasn’t really giddy. I don’t get giddy. I was pleased. After browsing through, I decided I should order a box of RJ’s Black Soft Natural Eating Licorice. For $15 I would be getting four 10.5 ounce bags. In general, Amazon’s prices are fairly good, especially if you don’t have to pay for shipping. Plus, with Prime I get two-day shipping, so I don’t have to wait weeks for my fix.

When the box arrived, I eagerly dove in. As I ripped open the first bag, the sweet, wonderful smell of licorice drifted up to greet me. After the first bite, I realized I had found a winner. These are soft, smooth pieces of heaven. They are shaped as many typical licorice candy – solid tubes about two inches long. Their exterior is black, but when you bite into one, a soft brown interior is revealed.

Their taste is simply delicious. Sweet and mild, the licorice flavor is obvious, but it’s so well balanced with sweetness that it’s almost impossible to stop eating. In fact, I had a slight breakdown when I realized I had eaten all four bags. I managed to hold back for about a week before I broke down and had to order another shipment. Now that box is empty as well, and the withdrawal is starting to set in.
