Retro Candy Flashback: Wax Lips

When I look at the popular line of Bratz dolls, all I can think of are Wax Lips. The over-sized flavored lip-shaped wax that magically seemed to release a tasty juice when you chewed it up. Did they really turn into gum or did I just chew the wax so much that it seemed like it? How fun were these? Loads of fun! You could instantly become a superstar without Botox or a costly cosmetologist! A superstar in your own mind, perhaps. In any case, Wax Lips could transform you. They made kids confident and loving, pretending to pucker up for anyone within ten feet of them.

Wax Lips have a sort of “bit” on the back that you can slip between your lips to wear the wax lips. If you got excited and bit through that part, your fun was significantly halted. All you can do without the back piece is hold them up to your lips with your fingers. So, training yourself not to bite the back part off was a proud talent. Wax Lips used to be at all the dime-stores when I was a kid… Where have they gone? You would think with all the big-lipped dolls, they’d make a comeback.

Wax Lips were invented by the American Candy Company in the early 20th century (whoa!). Concord Confections, Ltd. picked them up in 2002, and then Tootsie Roll Industries picked up that company in 2004. The lips are now called “Wack-O-Wax” which, to me, makes them sound like a horror movie. I suppose if you were a boy on the other side of those lips, it would be like something out of a horror movie. The more boy-friendly version of Wax Lips is Wax Fangs – lips with fangs!

About Heather

Wherever Heather goes, there is bound to be candy in some form or fashion. If you are having sugar withdrawls, just look for her. She always has some tucked away nearby. New candies intrigue her, old candies charm her. Much like candy, her wardrobe is colorful and fun despite the fact she is 31! She enjoys cosplay and anime, and has a soft spot for the 80\'s. Since Japanese culture fascinates her, she loves to get her hands on quirky Japanese candy (though does her best to avoid eating dried sea creatures). Her love of sweets inspired her to want to create a site where she could review candy and share her ideas about the things she likes. After some searching, she discovered \"Candy Addict\" and it was love at first site! (Hee.) Random fun facts: Location: Florida Favorite subject in school: English RP weapon of choice: various candies + slingshot! Favorite event: anime conventions Favorite flavor: banana or strawberry (but NOT together!) Flavor disliked: hot cinnamon Latest fascination: the Japanese band An Cafe (or Antique Cafe). \"Apparently it\'s really hard to get their CDs in the U.S...\" v_v

  1. There’s something about the flavor of wax lips that I can’t quite put my finger on. It’s sort of minty, yet not. I really like it!

  2. actually the wax lips were made by w & f which went broke in 1990 and then it was glenn confections . American candy next came into the picture.

  3. Thanks for the information. I have looked for the wax lips and also the Wowee was gum whistles that we use to get years ago! I have ordered the Wack-o-Wax lips and they don’t have the same texture the old ones did. They seem a bit harder and just not as smooth. I am glad we can get something though.

  4. I agree totally with Leonard’s comments.. Wack-O-Wax by Concord Confections is definitely NOT the same taste as the Fun Gum Sugar Lips made by the American Candy Co. It’s not just the consistency; the flavor is just not there. I was fortunate enough to buy some of the good-old Sugar Lips a few years back and was then sadly disappointed to order more and received the Wack-O-Wax. Now why did they have to go and ruin a good thing?

  5. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, I REALLY NEED SOME CHINESE FORTUNE GUM(YOU KNOW IN THE ORANGE WRAPPER)WHERE CAN I FIND SOME?
