Munch’s Scream Painting Recovered Because of M&Ms?

Munch's Scream

In what I can only call a strange twist of fate, the Edvard Munch masterpiece, “The Scream” was recovered only 11 days after M&Ms announced a 2 million Dark M&M’s reward for its recovery. The painting, seen above, was stolen on August 22, 2004 from the Munch Museum in Oslo, Norway and hasn’t been seen since.

I joked about the criminal turning himself in for the candy reward, and it looks like one of the crooks involved did turn over the paintings….whether or not he heard about the M&Ms reward is unknown. M&M’s has promised to make good on the reward offer. Two million M&M’s Dark Chocolate Candies translates to approximately 40,000 1.69 ounce bags with a retail value of about $22,000.00.

The truth is stranger than fiction.

Blog Day 2006

Today is Blog Day, 2006! It’s a very cool concept – you write about five blogs that your readers might not know, but might enjoy. I’ve already been mentioned at Anne’s Food (thanks, Anne!). I already have a list of some other candy-related blogs in the lower right under “Other Candy Sites”, so these will be non-candy sites. Here are the five (non-candy) blogs I think you should check out:

  • The Sneeze: A zany look into life as told by Steve. For new visitors, be sure and read his series of articles entitled “Steve, don’t eat it!
  • Pictures I Like For A Variety Of Reasons: Weird and wacky photos from all over the internet. They aren’t always family-safe, but they are nearly always cool/funny/interesting.
  • The Generator Blog: I’m not sure what’s so intriguing about finding cool new “generators” online, but I like it.
  • Preshrunk: A blog about T-shirts. Jason points us to all kinds of great t-shirts and t-shirt sites. I love tees.
  • Cute Overload: I don’t visit daily (too much cuteness), but I stop by anytime I or my daughter needs a smile. Cuteness, cuteness everywhere.

UPDATE: Another blog has linked to me for BlogDay. I love the description:

CandyAddict. A chocolate blog. Incredible I believed that single houses, bridges and castles could be made of chocolate. There are so much imagination and excelent design in this blog, but also a commercial enormous sense. ……

I’m not sure what it all means, but I think it’s a compliment.

Candy Review: Joyva Sesame Crunch

Joyva Sesame Crunch

After a night of taste-testing tons of candy, I was ready for something unique and delicious. I found what I was looking for in a sample box sent to me by the people at Halvah. The Joyva Sesame Crunch bar has a wonderfully distinctive flavor and texture. The bar is thin and flat and made up of four simple ingredients: sesame seeds, sugar, corn syrup, and honey. It’s Awesomely Addictive.

My favorite candies are usually coated, filled, or mixed with chocolate, but the Sesame Crunch bar is in a league of its own. It’s slightly sticky, crispy, and satisfying, and naturally honey-sweet. If you buy the bars from halvah.biz, they’re only fifty cents per bar. The waistline expansion factor isn’t bad either—a 1.125oz bar has 190 calories, and according to the manufacturer, the candy’s kosher.

I haven’t looked for the Sesame Crunch bars in stores because I still have one left from my sample stash, but I’ll be on the hunt during my planned Labor Day Weekend candy shopping spree. I gotta have some more!

Deep-fried Snickers in the papers again

Deep-fried Snickers

It’s almost time for state fairs to start rolling into town again and that means more deep fried candy bars. The editor of the Patriot Ledger (a newspaper in Boston) emailed me last week asking if they could use one of my pictures of deep-fried Snickers in their paper. I said yes (and why not?) so here’s the online article, photo credit and all. For those keeping score, that’s the second paper that has used that picture – I guess that’s because they are the only good pictures of a deep-fried Snickers that can be found online and our review is the #2 Google hit.

I do like that review though – it’s the first one that I remember that I tried to be funny and (I think) it worked. I had fun with it. I wasn’t even trying to do a good job with those pictures I took and now that set of pictures is more famous than this whole site is. Maybe I should change careers and start photographing fair food. Nah, too seasonal. State fairs come once a year, candy is everyday.

Hershey’s Contest Gives $10,000 For Your Sweet Pumpkin

Candy Addict Pumpkin
(made with Hershey’s Virtual Pumpkin Decorator)

What self-respecting Candy Addict doesn’t love Halloween? It’s got cool costumes, scary movies, and as much free candy as your pillowcase will hold! This year Hershey’s is looking to bring candy and Halloween even closer together with their “Sweeten Up Your Pumpkin Contest”.

The contest, which has already started, challenges you to decorate a pumpkin using a combination of Hershey’s candy products as well as craft supplies. The grand prize is a whopping $10,000, which should keep you stocked with candy for quite a while, or, if you’re like me, help pay off some of those student loans!

You can enter either online at TrickOrTreats.com or by mailing in your photo with an entry form that you can pick up wherever you do your candy shopping. At the site, you can also view a bunch of pumpkin decorating videos and play with the Virtual Pumpkin Decorator (see teh offical Candy Addict pumpkin above).

If you decide to enter, there are quite a few rules and guidelines concerning things like file size and eligibility, so be sure to read them all before entering. One of the major rules is obviously that you can only use Hershey’s brand candy (or one of the other brands under Hershey’s, see the website for a list) to decorate your pumpkin, and they must be currently available (no using that stash of Cherry Kit Kats you have stored away from Valentine’s Day…not that I have any or anything like that.)

The deadline is November 1st, and is judged on creative use of product, relevance to Halloween, and originality. If any Candy Addict readers enter (or win!) be sure to let us know!
