Candy Memories

Candy and Me

While poking around online yesterday I came across a candy book called “Candy and Me (A Love Story)” by Hilary Liftin which sounds like a great book:

Candy and Me is a passionate, humorous encounter with the meanings of life found in the yearnings for something chocolaty, something sugary, something fruity, and something new. Liftin’s fresh, dry humor will immediately absorb you into her sweet obsessions.

Even better though, on the author’s site I found a link to this website that allows users to post their memories of candy. You can find memories from Aba Zaba to Zotz. Some of them are really touching/funny. Here is the first one I read:

Shauna on Atomic Fireballs -1980
When I was thirteen my sisters and I spent the summer with my father and his much, much, much younger wife. They had a thing for Atomic Fireballs. Or to be more accurate, he had a thing for the hot and spicy part, she for the sweet. So there we were, my sisters and I, floating around the epically large seat of my Father’s Cadillac, watching them trade the Fireballs back and forth between big sloppy kisses where tongue was clearly visible. Hot. Sweet. Hot. Sweet. Back and forth. Back and forth. That I am still able to eat Atomic Fireballs is something of wonder to me.

Gross. Atomic Fireballs are one of my favorite candies but now I think the memories have just been ruined. Thanks, Shauna! Check out lots of other great candy memories here.

  1. I just got Candy & Me yesterday– I’m looking forward to reading it!

RESPONSE: Cool! If you want to write a “book review” for Candy Addict, let me know!

  2. I wasn’t that fond of the book. The nostalgic parts were nice, but the “love story” aspect of it was superficial. It’s pretty much “girl likes candy, girl has bad boyfriends, girl eats more candy, girl meets mr. right, girl doesn’t need candy.”

RESPONSE: Ah – that does sound kinda lame – not something I would want to read anyway. Thanks!
