Jelly Belly visitor wins his weight in jellybeans

Jelly Belly jellybeans

What would you do with your weight in Jelly Belly Jellybeans? Well, if you’re Mike Lively, the answer is “figure out how to get them home”. Mike, a 41 year old Indiana steel worker, was the 1,000,000th visitor to the Jelly Belly factory in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin this past Wednesday, and he won his weight in Jelly Beans.

Mike won 288 pounds of Jelly Beans, though he claims he only weighs 278 pounds. Wednesday was also his birthday, making the jellybeans a nice alternative to a birthday cake. Here are some random facts about 288 pounds of Jelly Belly jellybeans (if we did the math right):

  • 288 pounds of jellybeans is approximately 115,200 jellybeans
  • 115,200 jellybeans is about 460,800 calories
  • it takes Jelly Belly 5.5 minutes to make 115,200 jellybeans (at 347 beans a second)

You can take your own virtual tour of the Jelly Belly factory, but we’re pretty sure you won’t win your weight in jellybeans for doing it.

Candy Review: Tootsie Roll Mini Chews

Tootsie Roll Mini Chews

Candy Addict Awesomely Addictive Candy Award

I wish I could stop saying “this is my new favorite candy,” but near-perfect products just keep finding their way from stores to my mouth. That said, Tootsie Roll Mini Chews just might really be my new favorite candy. It took me two or three bites to get used to the taste and texture of chocolate-covered Tootsie Rolls, because the candy was unlike anything else I’ve ever tried. By the fourth bite, I was hooked.

Each piece is about half the size of a regular Tootsie Roll and generously covered in milk chocolate. It’s the sort of candy that can easily be tossed into the mouth over and over again. In fact, I most enjoyed eating three or four at a time. The Tootsie Roll is wonderfully soft, and the chocolate gives the candy a unique identity without stripping it of authentic Tootsie Roll flavor.

The Mini Chews are available in 2.5 oz and 4.5 oz boxes, and in bags of snack-size boxes. You might want to issue a warning to friends and family who try these—eat at your own risk of addiction. This is the first candy to get our brand new “Awesomely Addictive Candy Award”!

Chocolate-dipped Altoids Mints Announced

Chocolate-dipepd Altoids tin

UPDATE: We got our hands on all three flavors – read the review!

A reader tipped me off today about this one (thanks, Enrique!) … Two days ago, on July 25, Wrigley’s issued a press release. Buried inside it with a lot of blather about profits, growth, and stock was an interesting announcement – chcolate-dipped Altoids by the end of the year:

“Next month, we will be unveiling exciting new creative behind our flagship Altoids brand; and by year end, as the clear leader in mints, Altoids will introduce the next great innovation to the category — chocolate-dipped mints — in time to make it an especially Happy New Year for our customers and consumers.” said Ralph Scozzafava, Vice President – Worldwide Commercial Operations.

Interesting. It never occurred to me, but why not? We have Junior Mints and York Peppermint Patties and have proven mint and chocolate go together. Why not put chocolate over “curiously strong” Altoids? According to the tin above, they are using dark chocolate – no word if milk chocolate will be available. My guess is that it won’t. Judging from the picture above, it looks like they will be packaged in tins as we all assumed they would be.

I searched all over the place and could find no further information online. We’ll keep you updated as this story develops. (I always wanted to say that.)

Litterbox Cake

Litterbox Cake

I don’t know why I think this is so funny. Maybe it’s because I have three cats and I’m intimately familiar with litterboxes. Maybe it’s because I have the maturity of a 12-year-old in my 30-something-year-old body. This is a cake but it looks just like a litterbox. It’s made with either a spice or a German chocolate cake mix, white cake mix, white sandwich cookies, instant vanilla pudding mix, green food coloring, and 12 Tootsie Rolls. I love the description:

Litterbox Cake is a moist, tasty medley of cake and instant pudding accented with green cookie crumbs and chocolate candy “turds”. It’s especially appropriate for a cat-lover’s wedding or birthday, but really it’s hard to think of an occasion when a Litterbox Cake wouldn’t hit the spot.

Some more great quotes from the recipe:

  • “Place a new liner in the new cat box. (This is not a time to cheap out on used goods!) “
  • “Put three unwrapped Tootsie Rolls in a microwave-safe dish. Heat them until soft and pliable, about ten to twenty seconds. Using your fingers, shape the ends so that they are tapered and slightly curved at the ends. (Analysis of the contents of an actual cat box may be useful for research purposes.)”
  • “You may also wish to artistically drape one or more Tootsie Rolls over the side of the box”
  • “Serves one teenager, 5-6 inebriated adults, or zero sober adults.”

Litterbox Cake Accessory

My sister‘s birthday is next month – I am sooooooo tempted to make this for her. While checking out the Tacky Living site for the Litterbox Cake recipe, be sure and check out the recipe for Tic Tac Pie also – it’s a pie that requires 4 boxes of orange Tic Tacs!

UPDATE: Lonnie sent in a picture (seen below) of the litterbox cake he made! YUCK! Thanks, Lonnie!

HOWTO: Make a candy wrapper bracelet

Candy Wrapper Bracelet

I never made these when I was young (I never felt the need to make or wear a bracelet) but I’m sure some of the women reading this did. I always wondered how they were made and now I know. Cat Morley presents a great tutorial on how to make bracelets out of wrappers from candy like Starburst on her blog Cut Out + Keep.

If gum is more your thing, you can get instructions on how to make them with gum wrappers from Gary Duschl the Guiness Book Of World Record holder for the longest gum wrapper chain – currently 48,077 feet long.
