Chocolate Cat’s Tongues

Chocolate Cat's Tongues

Junk Food Blog brings to our attention Chocolate Cat’s Tongues from Japanese food maker, Fujiya. They come in a variety of flavors:

  • Platinum Cats: milk chocolate with a hint of salt providing a refreshing aftertaste
  • Blonde Cats: slightly bitter semi-sweet chocolate with vanilla aroma
  • Feel Safari: bittersweet chocolate with cinnamon, clove, and black pepper
  • Feel Envy: mild chocolate with vanilla & coconut flavor

What possessed someone to make candy that looks like cat’s tongues? Maybe they came up with the shape first then the name? I wonder if it’s rough like sandpaper?

  1. I just posted a photo of the Feel Envy I picked up while I was in NYC.
The chocolate is nice … I’m sorry I didn’t see one of the more interesting flavors, like the Safari.

For some reason it’s an Eastern European thing to make chocolate pieces in those paddle shapes.

    I reviewed some here (there’s a photo)

More importantly, there are links there to other mentions of the kitten tongue chocolates.

  2. Well, I think “Chocolate Cat’s Tongues” is just about the weirdest candy name I’ve ever heard. I guess I’ll never understand the thought processes in Japanese food companies. Thanks for posting this; I’m going to have to ask a few friends in Japan if they’ll send me some!

  3. Thanks for the post on my flickr photo sending me here! I got all four varieties while traveling in Taiwan, at a Japanese dept. store basement grocery. Anyone try them & write a review yet?

  5. Bergdorf Goodman in New York sold delicious chocolate cat tongues this Easter as part of their chocolate offerings. You can easily get these in the US. Beautiful boxes too from Bergie’s!!!

  6. The chocolate cat tongue thing is an old-fashioned candy from Germany they are called
Katzenzungen so Fujiya is actually borrowing from an old-world tradition!
