I recently stumbled upon this post by Ethel, a “self-confessed sufferer of OCD”. Am I the only Candy Addict that doesn’t sort or otherwise arrange his Skittles and M&Ms? I think I remember reading that Cybele at candyblog.net does and I heard my wife say she does something similar. Me? I just eat them. One at a time, a few at at time with no rhyme or reason.
In Ethel’s post, she goes into great detail into her Skittles rituals:
- Obtain Skittles
- Purge the Evil Purple Skittles
- Begin Insanity
- Even Things Out
- Continuation of the Even Out
- The Stragglers
- The Halving of The Skittle Stragglers
Basically, she sorts by colors (tossing the purples), eats them two at a time, then if there are any left after eating them two at a time, she halves them so that she always has the same combination on both sides of her mouth. Now that’s taking candy OCD to new levels! Some of her readers even admit to similar things in the comments on her post.
Do any Candy Addict readers have OCD tendencies like this when it comes to candy (that you’d be willing to admit to)? I’d also be interested to hear what our new Candy Addict writers David and Victoria have to say to this.
I don’t sort, except to rid my pile of the flavors I don’t like. But I do find myself trying to even out the flavors so that I have the same number of each flavor left. First I eat the extras leaving myself with equal amounts of each flavor. Then I eat one of each flavor, so I’m still left with the proper flavor balance. But they are allowed to comingle, and if there’s a bunch (like the start of the bag of jelly beans) I don’t really do this. Just after I get to the point where I can easily tell how many of each are left.
Thanks for the entry! I’m glad I’m not alone in my candy craziness. I don’t always do it, but if left alone with a bag of Skittles and no one to make fun of my Skittle sorting, that’s exactly how I’ll eat them.
Yes, they must be sorted by color and put in pairs. Those without pairs get eaten first. Everything else gets eaten in pairs from least favorite to most favorite. I also have a prescribed order for eating Chuckles: yellow, black, orange, green, red. It never seemed odd to me until my wife and co-workers took notice.
At least I don’t limit myself to white foods like Larry on the show Numb3rs.
Also, I am not a self-confessed sufferer of OCD. I have written a few amusing blogs about OCD tendencies.
who has time to sort when you’re busy stuffing your mouth?!
Actually, I am OCD and candy is definitely “victim” to my habits.
I have to freeze my Skittles. And PURPLE SKITTLES ARE MY FAVORITE FLAVOR!!!!!!!!!!! Ethel, you can give me all of yours! ;P
Also, I eat candy or energy bars with a fork, sliiiiiightly warmed, in layers (usually outer coating first, then parts of middle in different orders depending on what’s in it, then bottom coating), all in micro bites that dissolve almost copletely before swallowing. I usually do half at a time, put it in tupperware, then do the other half later.
LOL Candy is so much fun.
I eat my M & M’s in rainbow order and two at a time.
Everything I eat has to be the same amount on both sides, duh.. haha
Yea the brown ones are out. Eeeeevil.
Everyone loves eating them with me cause they always get like half the bag in leftovers.
I do the same that g(?) does. I eat them so that there are equal amounts of each color (i weed out purple too, grape is grodie) and then eat them one at a time so that there are equal numbers left. This all gets thrown out the window of course if I’m eating them in the movie theater. Although then I end up eating the grape ones :P.
My OCD varies by candy type, but I always bite something in half rather than eating the whole thing, no matter how small it is. Several years ago, I was eating a fancy dinner and was made fun of for cutting a truffle in half. When the halves fell apart, an almond covered in green, fuzzy mold was nestled in the chocolate. Very disgusting.
I do that almost to the exact detail! and when I eat a chocolate bar, especially one that has like little mini pieces, I have to break it apart into little tiny pieces and eat them that way… and then with Starbursts, if I’m sitting down and eating them, I have to make starbursts sandwiches with the candies… and when eating peanut M&Ms I have to try and break off as much of the shell as possible…
I’m not quite as bad.
My friends say its on the borderline of OCD.
I sort out each color,
Then, the odd numbered pieces of candy, I cut in half and add it to other colors,
i.e, half yellow, half red,
then, eat the odds.
After that I make each pile even, and eat one from each pile at the same time untill they’re all gone.
I’m not going to even get in on how I physically eat the candy itself.

I take out the whole set of a certain colour and eat them in twos, if there’s one left of a colour I give it to someone or chuck it away. I eat the colours in order of the colours in a rainbow. Shame there’s no blue or indigo, purple is just violet

Oh, that sound familliar… wait, I tend to do something similar to this (but that’s Wifey who pointed it out). Here is my variation, using peanuts M&Ms (but it does apply to any kind of candies):
- Ignore isanity (If you notice it, you aren’t really insane)
- Empty bag of candy
- Sort by colours (eat 1 or 2 in the process, but only if too many of that colour)
- Sort each pile as a rainbow
- Even Things Out by eating the odd ones
- Further even things out by eating miss-shaped ones going from the Red to the Purple in the colours
- Once evened enough, admire for a few seconds (prety rainbow)
- Eat from Red to Purple gradually to show the rainbow disapearing
- Enjoy the sugar rush
- Don’t even question oneself
- Ignore Wife’s comments about the insanity of it all
Hugs
Eric.
Well i have to dump the whole bag, then i seperate them first i pick out the purple and the red ones and put them aside….then i put one yellow, one orange, and one green together and make my piles…i eat all teh extras then eat my piles after that i do the same with the purple and red ones…the girl i work with thinks i am crazy.
Numb3rs is very unique because they crack case by means of mathematics..”`
