Review: PayDay Chocolatey Avalanche

PayDay Chocolatey Avalanche

Hospital food is disgusting, but at least Atlanta Medical Center stocks its vending machines with decent candy for visitors. Eighty cents was steep for a regular size candy bar, but PayDay Chocolatey Avalanche said “NEW,” so I had to buy it.

I smell candy before I eat it. It’s a compulsion, but if it doesn’t smell good, I won’t touch it. When I tore open the Avalanche wrapper, a mixture of chocolate, peanuts, and caramel came out, and I got ready to feast.

The bar looks like a flatter Baby Ruth but tastes exactly like it should—a plain PayDay covered in chocolate. The inside was a little dry, and I couldn’t figure out if I wanted more peanut butter or more caramel or more chocolate. I finally decided I wished I’d just eaten a Baby Ruth.

PayDay’s combination of salty peanuts and sweet caramel is good, and I think it’s best left alone. The chocolate only added confusion to the taste for me, and usually I love anything covered in chocolate.

I haven’t seen the PayDay Chocolatey Avalanche in grocery or convenience stores, but I won’t be surprised if it shows up in the next candy rotation in the checkout aisles, even though there’s no mention of it on Hershey’s Website. I won’t buy another Avalanche, but it deserves better than living only inside a hospital vending machine.

  1. I’ve been seeing those at the 7-11 but didn’t pick one up. I was a little confused because I got a limited edition chocolate covered payday earlier this year, but it was covered with real chocolate … not a “chocolately coating”.

I was also curious about the packaging – it looks like the bar is only partially coated on the wrapper – or is it fully enrobed?

  2. It tasted like regular chocolate to me, but it’s not exactly the hardest taste to mimic. As for the bar itself, it’s completely covered by chocolate (or “a chocolatey” coating). Maybe the wrapper was meant to look like a chocolatey avalanche was coming down the PayDay from the top of the bar?

  3. These used to be my favorite candy bar back in the 80s and then they were discontinued much to my dislike. Back then it was simply called “Chocolatey PayDay.”

Today, I saw it in a vending machine and immediately bought two of them under the new name “Avalanche.” It was exactly as I remembered!

Thank you Hershey for bringing back this excellent treat. :)

  4. I absolutly love this Avalanche Payday bar. I had to have more. I went back to the store and bought 6 more. I love a good payday bar to begin with, but when the chocolate and carmel is added, it’s like heaven on earth. I have a new love! lol Payday Avalanche!!!!!!!!!!
