Hershey’s Limited Edition candy is truly limited

Reese's Limited Edition

I’ve always wondered about the Limited Editions candies. Aren’t all new candies “limited edition” until proven successful? If a candy is introduced to the market and doesn’t sell well, it was a limited edition. If a “Limited Edition” candy sells well, will it come out of LE status and become a “regular” edition?

In a recent article, Reuters reported that Hershey’s, one of the most frequent users of the “Limited Edition” phrase was “reducing the number of limited edition and seasonal offerings and streamlining underperforming brands”. So, if there is an LE you really like or have been meaning to try, you’d better get it while you can.

Other interesting items from the article:

  • Hershey’s “said it was expanding in high-growth categories such as dark chocolate, cookies and snack nuts”
  • “brands that failed to do well included its Swoops, Bites, and Pot of Gold chocolate candies”

I tried Swoops once and they were ok, I never tried Bites because they were too darn expensive, and I’m not sure I have ever seen Pot of Gold chocolate candies. No wonder those failed to do well.

  1. I’ve seen the Pot of Gold candies, but I’ve never been tempted to try them. I agree with you that the Swoops weren’t anything special. I really liked the Bites, especially the toffee-flavored ones. The perfect Bites bag would have been full of toffee nuggets without the chocolate on the outside.

  2. I’ve enver liked the swoops but I’m a fiend for the Reese’s bites. I havn’t tried the other bites but I hope they don’t take the Reese’s bites away. One limited edition Hershey bar I miss is the cookies n’ chocolate. I can only find the one with white chocolate now.
