To show support for the England football team (soccer to us yanks) in the upcoming World Cup, Masterfoods is renaming their Mars bar to “Believe”. This is the first time since it was created in 1920 that the chocolate bar will change. The name will change later this month and will revert back to Mars after the tournament ends in July.
They have created a website to mark this occasion at http://www.marsbelieve.com/ though the only thing there right now is a countdown to the launch day of Believe. I’d love to have one of these wrappers! (hint, hint)
UPDATE: A kind fellow in the UK has said he has sent me one of the wrappers! Thanks, mate!
Coverage:
Actually, the countdown is to the release of the candy bar. The world cup is 63 days away.
RESPONSE: You’re right – just corrected it. Thanks!

this is an utter disgrace. I WILL BE BOYCOTTING ALL MARS PRODUCTS :)
April 17th, 2006 at 9:34 amThe launch may be just over 2 days away but I just had one.
Yummy it was too.
Do you still want one slightly scrunched and empty wrapper?
April 29th, 2006 at 10:35 amWhat will you name the Mars bar when Engerland
get humped in the world cup.
RESPONSE: My guess: Mars Bar. :)

Will never eat a Mars Bar again in my life and i am only 9 years old. Loosing lots of valuable customers considering here in Scotland we even eat them deep fried in batter!!!
May 15th, 2006 at 8:12 amI love mars bars you can call them poo nars and me and my cousin mike would still eat them
May 29th, 2006 at 8:17 amI am Scottish and although I will be supporting England in the World cup (as Scotland didnt qualify), I still get annoyed at this move by Mars to distribute these rebranded bars in Scotland as well. This is just plain stupid. It’s basically an assumption that Scotland is somehow a ‘part of England’ which of course it is not. It’s certainly a part of the UK but this doesnt mean we should all be forced to have English football fever shoved down our throats (literally).
How likely is it that this would happen the other way round with Londoners eating Mars Bars rebranded to urge them to ‘believe’ in the Scottish football team winning the World Cup (as unfeasable as that idea is)? hmm don’t think so.
June 5th, 2006 at 6:32 ampathetic tactics. wont be buying.
June 7th, 2006 at 5:45 amMust have 2 much money, that they are willing to lose profit on this over-the-top marketing………why do England always have 2 copy the Yanks and dramatise everything, if Scotland had qualified would they fix our pot hole roads far less change the name of a fattening sugar infested sweet.
June 7th, 2006 at 5:58 amfantastic MARS, me is an English man living in scotland and the shops are crammed full with BELIEVE bars, i have a small giggle to myself when i see these,
C’mon ENGERLAND
June 7th, 2006 at 11:44 amoh did I say ” C’mon ENGLAND”
engerland, engerland, engerland
June 7th, 2006 at 11:47 amSays it all when you see how many retail outlets in Scotland are selling off ‘Believe’ Mars bars 2 for the price of one, etc, because they aren’t shifting off the shelves.
Some bloke in Leith has jumped on the back of this, and is making a mint by selling t-shirts printed with ‘Believe…my a*se!’. I like his thinking!!!
June 26th, 2006 at 3:21 pmSince the topic is of Mars bars I will say one thing to the company – now that England are doomed in their failed attempt at the world cup, so can you be – I will never purchase another ‘Mars/Believe’ product in my lifetime – take that to the bank!
July 1st, 2006 at 1:18 pmto anyone who loves mars bars but wants to boycott them cos of the believe thing, there is a very similar candy bar called “bar one” which is made by nestle`.
July 9th, 2006 at 7:15 ami tried one and its just as good as the masterfoods mars/ believe bars!

October 3rd, 2006 at 9:13 pmAt least you can still buy the Mars bar in the stores, no matter what the name. They don’t carry the Mars bars in the U.S. stores any more.

Sorry to hear that Mars bars are only for sale in europe,we have been looking for one for about a year now and can only find snickers with almond. Actually Mars was changed once before in 1967 when they began using chopped almonds. Before that they had six whole sitting on top of that slab of white nougat, then was covered with the best milk chocolate ever. Why do candy makers always think they need to improve their product. Some things are perfect the way they are. So now Mars jouns the ranks of so many other candys that are no longer available. I only no of one place where you can still get a Zagnut bar, and it is in another state, so I stock up when I can. This was one other of my personal favorites. And what about Milk shake, Big Pay (no not payday), and Circus Peanuts (a little box of nuts with money inside), and Rex jelly, or Fizzies. Anyway I was glad to find out what happened to Mars. Now I guess we can stop looking.

Have just begun there first ‘believe’ campaign in aus… its in support of a bid for a Tasmanian team the AFL… i think good on em… its all for a bit o fun…
