Slammers – Wow in a bottle

Milky Way Slammer StarburstSlammer 3 Musketeers Slammer Moon Pie Slammer

While in my local gas station mini mart today I noticed a new product (new to me at least, I don’t frequent gas station mini-marts much). They are called Slammers. They’re essentially flavored milk. The store had Orange and Creme Starburst and Milky Way, but they also come in 3 Musketeers and even…gasp….Moon Pie flavors. I didn’t try either one since I only had $2 cash on me and didn’t feel like buying a drink I might not like. I went with the old standby – Yoo-Hoo.

Back to Slammers….here’s the Starburst description from the website:

The Bravo! flavor team has captured the actual taste of Starburst® candy in a rich, creamy smoothie, loaded with the nutrition of milk. Now you can get all the great flavor of Starburst® in a delicious good for you fruit & cream smoothie! It’s like a big bottle full of your favorite fruit chew flavor!

Maybe the orange tastes like an Orange Julius – that would be awesome!

Milky Way:

Now you can drink one of life’s simple pleasures, new Slammers® Milky Way® chocolate milk. Frothy nougat and chocolate taste that’s been an American favorite for over 90 years, now in reduced fat milk that’s fortified with vitamins A and D. So it’s great tasting and good for you.

The Milky Way actually sounds pretty good. I’ll be over there tomorrow….I might have to pick one up (assuming I have some cash on me).

Moon Pie:

Moon Pie® Slammers® comes in the most popular Moon Pie® flavors, Banana and Chocolate, in delicious 2% milk.

Is it just me, or does Moon Pie milk sound NASTY? Despite living in the South, I’ve never actually had a Moon Pie (and never had the desire to).

Tomy Cotton Candy Makers Recalled

Cotton Candy

Public Service Announcement: Tomy is recalling all of its home cotton candy makers that were produced in the last three years because they could catch fire. Making cotton candy = fun. Toys catching fire = not fun. If you have one of these, stop using it and return it to Tomy ASAP.

Review: Sour Spanks – Super Sour Chewy Candies

Sour Spanks

Sour Spanks are the latest creation from David Klein, the inventor of Jelly Belly Jellybeans. They are chewy/gummi sour balls coated in a super-sour powder. The Spanks are about the diameter of a dime and come in Lemonade, Tangerine, Grape, Cherry, and Green Apple flavors. Imagine an old-time sour balls coated with a super-sour powder and you have Sour Spanks.

The label says “So sour, they spank your mouth”, and they do. Luckily, the spanking lasts less than 10 seconds, so if you can last that long, you’ll be left with what is essentially an old-time chewy sour ball. The sour balls inside aren’t anywhere close to the extreme sour that we have in candies now (and on the outside of the Spanks) though – they’re actually fairly sweet inside. If you can’t handle the sour, you can chew it immediately once it’s in your mouth and that diffuses the sour pretty quickly – that was my four-year-old’s strategy.

Unfortunately, the flavors in the Spanks don’t come close to the flavor that Jelly Bellies pack. The Lemonade flavor has a really nice lemon kick to it – definitely the strongest flavor of the bunch. The Cherry has a good cherry taste to it and was probably the second strongest flavor behind Lemonade. Green Apple is probably my favorite flavor even though I don’t usually like green apple much. The Tangerine really does taste like tangerine and not orange (as weird as that sounds). The Grape reminds me of Grape Kool-Aid though it wasn’t as grapey as I wanted it to be.

As I sit here writing this, I can’t stop myself from eating more and more of these Spanks, so I guess that’s the indication of a good candy. I can’t help but think that these could move from good to great with an extra injection of flavor though. Sour Spanks can be ordered directly from the Nifty Candy website.

Candy Heart Art

Candy heart art

Artist Moira Hann has some amazing pieces of art, but this one stands out for me – it’s made with those Valentine’s candy hearts! Check out this blog post to see some close-up pictures of it (to prove it is made of candy) and visit her artist website to see more of her art (though I didn’t see any other pieces made with candy).
