Godiva Pop Rocks Truffles

Pop Rocks

Jasmine over at the “Confessions of a Cardamom Addict” Blog briefly mentions Pop Rocks Truffles from Godiva in two recent posts here and here. I can’t find any other reference to them anywhere online and even Godiva’s Truffles page doesn’t mention them. Either Jasmine is making this up or it’s a well-kept secret. They sound good though. I need to email Jasmine and ask her about it. Has anyone else seen/tried these?

Anyway, she then goes on to experiment with Pop Rocks and she uses them in a cookie recipe she calls PopStar Cookies (the cookies are star-shaped).

I love Pop Rocks – I never thought about using them in recipes – what other recipes would Pop Rocks be good in? I always thought putting them on ice cream would be good but I have never actually tried it.

UPDATE: Jasmine emailed me…..

Nope, not making them up and not suffering from any culinary delusions.

The Godiva in question was the one on Bloor Street in Toronto. They had a sample plate of the bonbons out and, get this, they weren’t for sale in the “pick and choose” case. IIRC, they were part of a box of preselected candies, and I think you only got *one* in the selection…quite unfair…I’m sorry, but I don’t recall what *that* particular collection was called. I don’t think it’s part of Platinum, but I could be wrong.

The truffles they had out had a berry centre, into which the candies were mixed. I don’t recall any distinguishable lumps, so I can only assume the candy was ground to a certain extent. They were enrobed in an ivory couverature with raspberry-red stripes. Similar fizzy truffles were also available in either milk or dark couverature (can’t remember) with orange stripes. I didn’t try the chocolate ones, so I don’t know if they too were berry-flavoured, but The Fussy Eater had one. I just asked him if it was raspberry-flavoured or something different–he doesn’t really remember but he thinks it could have been orange (which would make sense with the colours used).

Now…*I* call them Pop Rock truffles (because of the fizziness)…I’m sure if you ask the chocolatiers they’ll have some swanky name for it…but all of us in the store agreed they were Pop Rocks. I quickly looked at Godiva’s site when I originally posted, but couldn’t find them….

I’ll send a note to a couple of friends who live/work in the area and see if they can either head over *or* call in for the candy’s real name and let you know.

More to come…

Personalized M&Ms

Custom MMs

Did you know you can order custom printed M&M’s? Well, you can! Just drop by the site and come up with a message or two that span 2 lines, 8 characters per line. Unfortunately, they are very strict about what gets put on the candy. When I tried the phrase “Candy Addict” I got this mesage:

M&M’S Brand will not print any foul or questionable language on your M&M’S Chocolate Candies.

Please enter a different message.

It wouldn’t even take “Add1ct” (with a ONE instead of an I). They must have a HUGE list of words and word variations it won’t allow. It’s fun to try and beat the censor and get it to allow something “foul or questionable”. It did let me put “MMs Suck” (as seen in the image above) though. I can’t believe it allows the word “suck”. Wait… I see – if you put MMs Suck on two lines it rejects it, but all on one line it takes the word “suck”. Hehe.

Post in the comments any “foul or questionable” phrases you were able to sneak by the M&M censors! (Yes, it’s childish, but who cares – this is a site about candy for goodness sake!)

Dog Food Candy

Kooky Chew Candy

I was watching the Food Network the other day (love that station) and saw an episode where they were talking about strange candies. It was great, I wish we could post the entire show on here. This one stuck out though. It’s called Kooky Chew Dog Bowl Candy. Yes, it looks like dog food, it’s even in a dog bowl, but it tastes like graham crackers. Each bowl contains 2 1/2 ounces of delicious graham cracker flavor cookies (kibbles and bits) and a candy bone. They talked about how it’s difficult to keep your children out of the pet’s food at home. I don’t have children, so I can’t confirm or deny these statements. Please chime in, do your kids try to eat your pet’s food? Would they like this candy? And if they wanted it, would you let them eat it out of the dish like a dog?

The maker, Koko’s Confectionery & Novelty, also makes K9 Candies which are colorful dog bone shaped candies that also come in a plastic dog bowl.

CraniYUMS – Dinosaur Pops

CraniYums

A Candy Addict reader (thanks, Jerry!), dropped me a line the other day telling me about a candy called CraniYUMS. They look and sound really cool – it’s a crunchy dinosaur “skull” lollipop coated with a soft gummi “skin”. When you eat it, it’s like you really are biting into a dinosaur head. What ten-year old boy wouldn’t LOVE to have one of these? Heck, I’d like to have one and I am way past ten! They are available in two flavors – Growlin’ Green Apple with Chewy Cherry Skin and Chompin’ Cherry with Chewy Lemon Skin. (Crani)Yum!

Rubber Chocolates and other Candy Jokes

Rubber Chocolates

Somehow, while looking online for interesting candy, I found myself looking at fake rubber chocolates at gagworks.com and it reminded me of something that happened to me when I was a kid that I haven’t thought about in years.

I’ve always been somewhat of a prankster (just ask my two younger sisters), and when I was about nine years old, I got two rubber chocolates as a gift. The kind that look like fancy candy from a box of chocolates…only made of hard rubber. I was so excited that I could pull a fast one on someone and get them to try and eat fake chocolate. WooHoo! Trouble is, just handing someone a fancy (but fake) chocolate looks too suspicious, so it never seemed to work. Then, my mom got one of those tiny sample boxes of Whitman’s chocolates – it held four chocolates – just perfect for my gag.

I now had rubber chocolates and a box to hold them…now to find an unsuspecting victim. My dad was in the Army and one day a big Army buddy of his came over to the house so I thought I’d try it on him. I offered one to him and he bit….literally. He bit so hard it put teeth marks in my fake chocolate. It was funny that he bit it, but I was so bummed that he ruined one of my chocolates (half of them!). Now nobody was going to fall for a fake chocolate with teeth marks in it and I was left with one good fake chocolate. I think I still have those in a box somewhere.

Oh, to be nine years old again…..

Speaking of gag candy, GagWorks has a bunch of good gag candy – Blue Mouth Candy (and other colors too), Exploding Candy, Fish Candy, Soap Candy, Smelly Feet Candy, and lots more (or just search for “candy” at GagWorks). I guess Jelly Belly wasn’t the first to make gross candy.
