Candy Review: Burdick Chocolate Assortment

Burdick Chocolates

I meant to have a box of this for Valentine’s and write a review of it. It didn’t happen, and this box didn’t mean to happen either. I was actually buying them for Mother’s Day. I clicked on the wrong address in my account, and some stranger at my mom’s old address got a box of chocolate. They’re too fragile to be resold after they’ve been shipped back and forth, so all I could do was reorder another box.

That was when things took a turn for the better. When I reordered, they somehow managed to send the order to me instead. Since it was their mistake, they sent another to my mom, and I got this one for myself. Obviously, we were meant to be together.

There are two main things to know about this brand: First of all, this is very much a dark chocolate experience. There are a few milk chocolate pieces, but if that’s what you prefer, go elsewhere.

On the other hand, if you’re a dark chocolate fiend, like I am, read on.

Candy Review: CJ’s Bitz

CJ's Bitz White Chocolate

I would like to take a moment, if I may, to talk arithmetic. Addition, specifically. Addition is good; it means more – more numbers, more money, and in the best scenarios, more candy. Addition can be a tricky thing, though. Like with ingredients, for example. That whole too-much-of-a-good-thing thing. It’s sometimes hard to tell where that line is exactly, where a good thing becomes a very, very bad thing. I mean, if you start with a good ingredient and you add another good ingredient and the result is better, and then you add yet another one and get an even better result, I can see how one might be led down a dangerous path.

However, despite the understandable nature of such a misstep, it is snackably (I love how Candy Addict lets us just make up adverbs like that when we want to) unforgivable and, by my assessment, the very one made by CJ’s with a selection of their Bitz – an offshoot of their flagship Stix – products. Too bad, too, it’s a mathematical travesty, really.

Regional Candy Spotlight: K Chocolatier by Diane Kron

K Sensual

Ah, Malibu, California. A land of endless summer, where twenty-seven miles of ancient rocky coastline collide with crystalline ocean. Where rock-hard beach boys and beautiful surfer girls ride the waves just moments away from hillside manors of the rich and famous. Home of elite equestrian clubs, five-star detox resorts… and fine, European-style chocolate.

If that last item came as a surprise to you, you’re not alone. Malibu is, after all, starlet territory, and as we all know the it-girls around these parts prefer to subsist on water, air and salad. Thus, it was through pure luck and coincidence that, on my way toward a non-candy related venture in Oxnard, I discovered the splendid K Chocolatier by Diane Kron.

Candy Review: Somebody’s Mother’s Caramel and White Chocolate Sauces

Somebodys Mothers chocolate and caramel sauces
I recently reviewed Somebody’s Mother’s Chocolate Sauce over at our sister site, Snackerrific. When Somebody’s Mother sent two more smart little jars of her caramel and white chocolate varieties, the consensus around here was to share this sweet news with our loyal Candy Addicts.

What comes to mind when you think about chocolate sauce? Perhaps thin dark liquids from a can or plastic bottle poured over ice cream or into a glass of milk and stirred vigorously? Well, cast those memories aside. Forever.

Candy Review: Hershey’s Hugs

Hershey

What’s this? Valentine’s Day is past and I still haven’t reviewed any Valentine-type candy? Thank goodness for this big old bowl of assorted Hershey’s Kisses one of my coworkers left on the counter at work. As they say in French… YOINK!

Now, Hugs are kind of the under appreciated younger siblings of Kisses. They may not be as intimate, but that also means you can share them with a lot more people, from your mom to your best friend to that creepy wino who hangs out on the corner of 45th and Main… Oh wait, we’re talking about candy, aren’t we? Well, Hugs (the candy) may not be as well-known as Hershey’s Kisses or come in so many flavor varieties, but I like them all the same.
