Candy Review: Twix Dark and Triple Chocolate Minis

Categories: Candy,Candy Reviews,Chocolate Candy,Limited Edition Candy

Twix Dark and Triple Chocolate Wrapper

Everyone has their comfort candies they return to from their childhood. They are the sort of candies that aren’t gourmet by any means, but something you have enjoyed for so long that life without them would just seem strange. For some that candy is Snickers, Milky Way, or 3 Musketeers; for me, my heart has always belonged to Twix.

There is just something amazing about chocolate and caramel over a cookie. I can’t rationalize my love for this bar. I dislike most popular candy bars thinking they are too sweet or use inferior ingredients; however, as much as I pretend my mouth is a sophisticated tool of discernment, it craves these things.

You can therefore appreciate my excitement when I saw a Twix Minis Mix bag at Target, specially designed for autumn. It featured the classic as well as the Limited Edition Dark Chocolate and Triple Chocolate bars. I hadn’t tasted either of those in years and couldn’t wait to sample them again.

A few quick reviews to make you hungry:

Twix PBTwix PB: It’s not too sweet, which is nice. The Twix PB had some good flavor, but overall, it just didn’t do it for me. It’s just not truly a Twix for me unless it has caramel in it. The chocolate cookie was a nice touch though. Overall, it’s not bad, but not great.

Snickers DarkSnickers Dark: Snickers Dark is back on the market for good after being a Limited Edition. If ever there has been a case for milk chocolate over dark, this is it. Regular, milk chocolate Snickers is sooooo much better. This barely tasted like a Snickers! Skip the Dark.

mint_3_musketeers.jpg3 Musketeers Mint: Rachel tried this a while back and wasn’t thrilled with it. I thought it was great. It had plenty of minty goodness for me and tasted like a York Peppermint Patty in bar form. Good stuff.

Hi-Chew Green AppleHi-Chew Green Apple: Hi-Chew is a Japanese favorite and this is the first flavor I have tried. WOW! Loved it! Oddly rubbery at first but turns chewy and super-delicious. If you like sour apple flavor you must try it. Now I want to try all the Hi-Chew flavors!

tung_toos.jpgTung Toos: We first mentioned these over a year ago and I finally got to try them now. They don’t have a ton of flavor since they are more for fun than for “eating”, but they are definitely fun. They’re the kind of thing my six-year old daughter loves. It’s just not really an adult thing.

Candy Review: Twix Java

Twix Java

Good lord this candy bar is good. Seriously. I think of all the Limited Edition candy I have tried, this is by far the best. The wrapper says “Coffee Caramel & Chocolate Cookie Covered in Milk Chocolate” and the coffee flavor is just right – not too strong and not too weak. The chocolate cookie goes perfectly with the coffee flavor and the milk chocolate. Looking on the ingredient list, I see “espresso ground coffee” as the last ingredient, so it looks like it gets its coffee taste honestly.

Just to make sure I wasn’t the only one who thought this Twix Java was good, I shared and gave one stick to my wife. She agreed it’s great. It’s definitely good enough to earn our coveted CandyAddict.com Awesomely Addictive Candy Award. It’s that good.

According to the press CD I got from Mars, “TWIX® Java will be available in retail stores nationwide in December 2007.” Most candies actually hit stores before their scheduled release date, so if you are hankering for some Twix Java goodness, I’d start looking for it in stores right about… NOW. No word on how long the limited edition will last, so get it while you can.

Candy Trivia: Twix’s original name

Categories: Candy,Chocolate Candy

I found this because a reader had searched for “Twix original name” on the site. I googled it and found the answer at UsefulTrivia.com:

The Twix candy bar, first introduced in 1979, was known as a “Raider” bar in France, Germany and several other European countries until 1991 when Mars decided to standardize its name.

Twix White Chocolate

Here are a few new candies I’ve tried recently and some quick reviews of them:

  • M-Azing Peanut Butter: When I first saw the commercials for M’Azing I wasn’t impressed. M&Ms in chocolate? Big deal. Well, I was hunting for some chocolate a few days ago and found a mini M-Azing Peanut Butter in my daughter’s Valentine’s Day goody bag and thought I’d try it (don’t tell me daughter). It was good. Really good. The mini M&M’s are filled with peanut butter and are a great mix with the chocolate bar. Very sweet, slightly salty – VERY good.
  • Twix White Chocolate: I generally steer clear of white chocolate because I just don’t like it. My wife picked up this limited edition Twix bar and it was surprisingly good – I’m not sure it was better than a regular Twix, but it was definitely better than I expected. It had lots of caramel (which is a good thing).
  • IceBreakers Ice Cubes: My sister gave me one of these and I wasn’t impressed. It wasn’t bad, but I was expecting more from it.
  • Rice Krispies Caramel Kazaam Crunch: I picked one of these up to munch on my way back from Atlanta. It reeked of caramel but tasted horrible. The caramel tasted “fake”. It has a layer of substandard chocolate on the bottom. There was not enough (any) marshmallow keeping it together so it seemed dry. You should definitely pass on these.
  • Belly Flops: I forgot how good Jelly Belly jellybeans are. After writing about JBFlops recently, I got to try some and they are fabulous. There are some that are rejects (two or more stuck together generally) but the vast majority of the flops seem perfectly fine to me…and are quite tasty.
