Justin Bieber and Brenda Song share Vuvuzela Balls: a new candy from Haribo

Vuvuzela Balls

Tween sensations Justin Bieber and Brenda Song are set to endorse a new candy from Haribo called Vuvuzela Balls. Now that the news is out of the way… what?! What kind of a name is that? It instinctively makes me uncomfortable. Yes, I know the vuvuzela is the loud horn thing that buzzed throughout the World Cup games, but still. The name is apparently not necessarily “a keeper” (soccer pun, I kill me) and could be changed. From a marketing perspective, I can see how naming the candy after the now popularized horn can be beneficial to Haribo. I don’t even follow soccer, and I knew what it was. Vuvuzela Balls are bound to catch someone’s attention and cause a double-take. But, still. Eh, I’m just not sure I can handle “Would you care for a Vuvuzela ball?” Ok, I wouldn’t talk about it, but I’d eat it.

Butterfinger has partnered with the G4 TV network to announce a search for the 4th member of the Butterfinger Defense League (BFDL). Two lucky semi-finalists will meet current members of the BFDL — Erik Estrada (CHIPS), Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk) and Charisma Carpenter (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) — and G4’s Attack of the Show! hosts Olivia Munn and Kevin Pereira at Comic-Con in July when G4 broadcasts the announcement of the winner live.

Bonomo Turkish Taffy

CLASSIC CARAMEL TO MANUFACTURE AND DISTRIBUTE BONOMO TURKISH TAFFY®

CAMP HILL, PA Classic Caramel, LLC is pleased to announce that is has signed agreements with Bonomo Turkish Taffy®, LLC to manufacture and be the master distributor to the retail trade for Bonomo®.

Bonomo®, one of the great nostalgic candy brands, has not been commercially manufactured or sold since the mid 1980’s. Bonomo® was a true national brand in the 1950’s and 1960’s. The company’s tagline, “Smack it Crack It!”, was realized by consumers as they smacked the taffy against a hard surface and ate the pieces off the wrapper.

The original formulation, manufacturing process, and even the original flavors have been resurrected. “In taste testing, the comments from those that remember the bar have been very complimentary, ‘just like they remembered it’ is the frequent comment” says Ken Wiesen, President and Co-CEO of Bonomo®.

“Bonomo® is truly a revered old fashioned candy brand with a unique taste and formulation that currently does not exist in the market. Classic Caramel is thrilled that this brand is joining our family of other nostalgic brands, Slo Poke®, BB Bats®, Kits®, & Flipsticks™. We look forward to bringing this favorite candy back to its loyal fans and to create a whole new generation of Bonomo Turkish Taffy lovers”, commented Richard Warrell, Director of Sales & Marketing.

Bonomo will be available in its original bar format, as well as bite size individually wrapped pieces. The bite size pieces will be available in an assorted change maker tub as well as straight flavor bulk. Product will be available for shipment July 2010.

Classic Caramel is a caramel, taffy, chew, and nougat manufacturer with its plant located in York, PA. The company markets nostalgic branded merchandise, such as Bonomo Turkish Taffy®, Slo Poke®, BB Bats®, Kits®, & Flipsticks™ to retail trade. In addition, the company has an extensive base of ingredient, private label, bulk, and contract manufacturing customers. Classic Caramel is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Warrell Corporation, based in Camp Hill, PA.

Candy News: candy.com Sells For Three MILLION Dollars

Candy.com

Yes, you read that right… $3,000,000.00. That’s a lot of zeroes. That’s Willy Wonka money. They say candy is one of the few recession-proof items and I believe it. It’s going to take a LOT of candy sales to pay for that domain name.

I am thoroughly unimpressed so far though – I can’t take anyone seriously that uses Comic Sans as their font. It will be interesting to see if they survive – it takes more than a good domain name to make a business and plenty of sites have thrived with terrible (or at least not optimal) domain names.

All Candy Expo 2009 – Part 5

Categories: Candy,Candy News

When I got the job writing for this site, very nearly a year ago, I was ecstatic. I’d have an excuse to try all kinds of exciting new candies and share my opinions of them with the world. I’d have a super-cool contract writing job that would also provide me with published writing samples for my resume. And maybe, just maybe, someday, I’d get to go to the All Candy Expo.

Now, I’ve wanted to attend the All Candy Expo ever since I heard it existed (like many people, from the Food Network show Unwrapped and that episode of The Simpsons with the gummy Venus de Milo.) It seemed like such an unlikely and far-away dream for your average writer and Candy Addict. But in the end, it came true!

I met up with fellow Candy Addicts Robby and Caitlin at Chicago’s McCormick Center bright and early on Tuesday morning. I knew I wasn’t in Kansas any more when, upon registration, I was presented with a big green tote bag – filled with candy! The press room wall was lined with full-sized chocolate bars and candies – Flings, Crackheads, and the new Skittles Crazy Cores and Fudge Snickers, to name a few. Robby and I immediately began to dig into the heap of freebies, which resulted in our being called newbies by expo veteran Caitlin. And, indeed, the sugar rush was only beginning.
