Oh, how I love this commercial. An old school gem from the early 80’s, this is the type of M&M’s commercial that carried the brand through the decade: happy jingles, close up shots of the (now retro!) bag of Plain M&M’s being poured into someone’s hand, and the happy M&M’s themselves, dancing about. Though our M&M friends have gotten a makeover over the past 25 years, what with computer animation, a slightly darker sense of humor, and clearly lower voices, the heart of these commercials remains the same: M&M’s are a fun and delicious candy, and, as the jingle here states: all the world loves them.
Be sure to look for my buddy, Tan M&M, who makes an appearance in this commercial. We will never forget you, Tan M&M! Though I’m not sure if it’s you in the commercial, or Orange M&M, I’m going to choose to believe it’s you! That’s how desperate I am to see a Tan M&M, people!
Also worth noting in this commercial is the computer the two kids are using. I’m pretty sure I played Oregon Trail on that computer in 1986. And I’m also pretty sure that I did it with a bag of M&M’s by my side.
The new M&M’s Premiums line has arrived, and as soon as you see a box you’ll realize that these are no ordinary M&M’s. These M&M’s are something special. From presentation to taste, M&M’s Premiums are quite impressive, hitting the mark in both style and substance.
The presentation is fantastic, starting with the outer packaging. The typical M&M’s bag has been swapped out for a sleek, upscale-looking box that is resealable on the outside as well as on the inside, as both the outer carton and the plastic inner pack of M&M’s come with resealable tabs to keep the candy locked in and fresh.
It’s a small but wonderful innovation, as it allows buyers to carry, share, and store the M&M’s without worrying that they’ll spill. You can also pour out a handful for a friend and then save the rest for later without having to resort to the old school M&M’s pack method of rolling the bag as tight as you can and shoving it in your pocket, which is nice.
The M&M’s themselves are also quite striking: with pearly shells of soft mint green, royal blue, shimmering copper, raspberry red, and a dazzling lavender, the M&M’s provide a lovely visual that I’m sure will be quite popular for parties, gifts, and holidays. Their decorative quality is fancier than your typical holiday-themed M&M, which makes them appropriate candy decor for weddings and other formal events as well. They really are quite lovely. Almost too pretty to eat.
Almost. But come on, now. A pretty candy shell isn’t going to stop me from shoveling M&M’s into my mouth in the least dainty way possible. I can’t help it, man! I’m a Candy Addict!
You’d have to be living in a cave to not know that the newest Indiana Jones film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be opening in theaters on May 22nd, and about time too! It seems that advertisements, posters and other promotional ties are everywhere with my favorites being the the Mint Crisp M&Ms, along with the Snickers Adventure Bar that were released especially for the new movie. Now you can enjoy more Indiana Jones candy action with the game on the M&Ms website!
The premise is simple: you experience the excitement of Indiana Jones by playing either as Green, Red or Yellow while you explore the ancient Mayan Temple in search of their greatest treasure: the Mint Crisp M&Ms! It’s very cute, especially since I felt as if I had my own treasure hunt trying to find these in stores. I found this game to be like the Mint Crisp M&Ms, totally addicting! Give it a try and be sure to let us know if you succeed in finding the treasure.
They’re finally here! The long awaited Mint Crisp M&Ms that we heard were coming out in time for the new Indiana Jones movie are finally on shelves. And not a moment too soon! Between my eagerness to see Indy in his new geriatric adventure glory and tasting the new M&Ms adventure that Mars has planned for us, I could hardly contain my excitement when I found these in the store. It was like finding Indy’s candy holy grail in a way.
The M&Ms are not the only new candy with the Indiana Jones tie-in. There’s also the Snickers Adventure Bar that I reviewed back in January. The plain Milk Chocolate, Peanut and the new Mint Crisp M&Ms are outfitted in new themed packages and they are quite attractive I admit (more so than the Shrek and the Pirates of the Caribbean ones M&Ms). Of course the Mint Crisp ones are a special limited edition flavor tied to the movie like the White Chocolate Pirate Pearls were.
In these turbulent times, not everyone has the time or inclination to contemplate the meaningful questions in life. There are just some questions that may be so complex, the average person just doesn’t want to take the time and form his own fundamental beliefs. We here at Candy Addict understand this, though, and so we’re going to lay it all out for you, and make these tough personal choices possible. Which is better: Cadbury Mini Eggs or M&M’s? Some may shy away from delving into this potentially explosive topic, but Candy Addict is not afraid. After all, to paraphrase the famous candy philosopher, Socrates, “The unexamined candy is not worth eating.”
While at the All Candy Expo I got some sneak peeks at some new M&Ms coming soon. Seen above is a banner advertising the new packs of all green M&Ms. Playing off of Candy Urban Legend #3, these packs contain only green M&M’s, for those times when you want to feel a bit frisky.
Next up is Wildly Cherry M&Ms. Available in March 2008, new M&M’S Wildly Cherry Chocolate Candies Limited Edition will be found in select retail stores nationwide. Much like their Razzberry cousins, they will only be available for a limited time and they will be available in all the usual package sizes.
Finally, you will see Mint Crisp M&Ms as a tie-in with the new Indiana Jones movie, set to release in May of 2008. These will be minty and contain rice crisps and will be promoted with the blockbuster movie, much like they did previously with the Pirates Of the Caribbean Pirate Pearls White Chocolate M&M’s.
What’s not to love about more varieties of M&M’s? The only thing I can think of is that some are Limited Edition, so if you fall in love with them, they won’t be around forever - kind of like a high school crush. So sad. But it’s fun while it lasts.
If Sno-Caps were called Small Chocolate Circles with Smaller Candy Circles Atop Said Small Chocolate Circles, they might not sell as well. The point here is this: sometimes the outside of the bag is just as important as the inside.
What I really don’t dig about Limited Edition Razzberry M&M’s is the word “Razzberry.” I’m not sure who these candies are being marketed to, but when I see raspberry spelled with two z’s, I immediately think of Blue RazzBerry Blow Pops and the summer that my father, normally an “I’ll have milk” person, was hooked on Berry Blue Kool-Aid. That type of “razzberry” flavor is usually super sour and unnatural tasting, and the thought of combining said flavor with milk chocolate didn’t get me too excited about trying Razzberry M&M’s.
For some reason, the package asks us to “Get Razzed!”; a bizarre request since “getting razzed” usually means getting teased relentlessly for doing something embarrassing. Being “razzed” is not normally an enjoyable experience.
After I got over my packaging issues, I ripped open the bag and poured the newfangled M’s into my hand. I was surprised at the sight of these strange, salmony/raspberryish-colored sweets: the sizing is quite different from regular M&M’s, resembling Peanut M&M’s that have had the peanuts extracted. The larger size also means fewer candies per bag, which is sort of a bummer.
Here are a few new candies I’ve tried recently and some quick reviews of them:
M-Azing Peanut Butter: When I first saw the commercials for M’Azing I wasn’t impressed. M&Ms in chocolate? Big deal. Well, I was hunting for some chocolate a few days ago and found a mini M-Azing Peanut Butter in my daughter’s Valentine’s Day goody bag and thought I’d try it (don’t tell me daughter). It was good. Really good. The mini M&M’s are filled with peanut butter and are a great mix with the chocolate bar. Very sweet, slightly salty - VERY good.
Twix White Chocolate: I generally steer clear of white chocolate because I just don’t like it. My wife picked up this limited edition Twix bar and it was surprisingly good - I’m not sure it was better than a regular Twix, but it was definitely better than I expected. It had lots of caramel (which is a good thing).
IceBreakers Ice Cubes: My sister gave me one of these and I wasn’t impressed. It wasn’t bad, but I was expecting more from it.
Rice Krispies Caramel Kazaam Crunch: I picked one of these up to munch on my way back from Atlanta. It reeked of caramel but tasted horrible. The caramel tasted “fake”. It has a layer of substandard chocolate on the bottom. There was not enough (any) marshmallow keeping it together so it seemed dry. You should definitely pass on these.
Belly Flops: I forgot how good Jelly Belly jellybeans are. After writing about JBFlops recently, I got to try some and they are fabulous. There are some that are rejects (two or more stuck together generally) but the vast majority of the flops seem perfectly fine to me…and are quite tasty.
Did you know you can order custom printed M&M’s? Well, you can! Just drop by the site and come up with a message or two that span 2 lines, 8 characters per line. Unfortunately, they are very strict about what gets put on the candy. When I tried the phrase “Candy Addict” I got this mesage:
M&M’S Brand will not print any foul or questionable language on your M&M’S Chocolate Candies.
Please enter a different message.
It wouldn’t even take “Add1ct” (with a ONE instead of an I). They must have a HUGE list of words and word variations it won’t allow. It’s fun to try and beat the censor and get it to allow something “foul or questionable”. It did let me put “MMs Suck” (as seen in the image above) though. I can’t believe it allows the word “suck”. Wait… I see - if you put MMs Suck on two lines it rejects it, but all on one line it takes the word “suck”. Hehe.
Post in the comments any “foul or questionable” phrases you were able to sneak by the M&M censors! (Yes, it’s childish, but who cares - this is a site about candy for goodness sake!)
